JCC FOCUSES ON
JEWISH SONGWRITERS

The Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit's Henry & Delia
Meyers Library and Media Center will
host the exhibit "A Fine Romance:
Jewish Songwriters, American Songs,
19101965" through Oct.19 at the
library, located on the lower level of
the JCC, 6600 W. Maple Road in West
Bloomfield.

The exhibit includes rare photos,
posters and other memorabilia high-
lighting George and Ira Gershwin,
Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen and other
Jewish-American composers who
helped shape American music.

In conjunction with the exhibit, the
Meyers Library, the West Bloomfield
Township Public Library and the
Jewish Historical Society of Michigan
will host a series of guest presenta-
tions and musical performances cel-
ebrating American Jewish songwriters
and songwriting.

These include:

• Oscar Andrew Hammerstein, discuss-
ing his new book The Hammersteins:
A Musical Theatre Family, on Tuesday,
Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Berman.
An autograph signing will follow. For

• Rudy Simons, speaking on
"Michigan's Great Jewish Songwriters:
1920s-1960s" on Sunday, Sept. 25, at
11 a.m. in the Berman. A kosher brunch
at 10:30 a.m. precedes the event.

members and $10 for non-members.
