but rather the destruction of
Israel."
In recent weeks alone, Adli
Sadeq, the PLO ambassador to
India, welcomed the Aug.18 ter-
rorist attacks in southern Israel,
which claimed the lives of eight
Israelis, describing it as a "qual-
ity operation." The official P.A.
TV broadcast a documentary in
which the narrator spoke of the
P.A. building a residential neigh-
borhood for Arabs in place of
Jerusalem's Western Wall Plaza
when the Israelis "disappear."
The P.A. prime minister, Salaam
Fayyad, often wrongly regarded
as a moderate, sponsored a sum-
mer camp in which the children
were divided into four groups
named after blood-soaked ter-
rorists: Yasser Arafat, Salah
Khalaf, Abu All Mustafa and Dalai
Mughrabi.

Third, the P.A.'s U.N. statehood
bid is dangerous — dangerous for
Israel, the world and even for the
possibility of an eventual peace.
Consider: Abbas himself
declared in a May New York
Times opinion piece that a U.N.
declaration of statehood would
not lead to peace. To the con-
trary, he wrote, "Palestine's
admission to the U.N. would pave
the way for the internationaliza-
tion of the conflict as a legal
matter. It would pave the way for
us to pursue claims against Israel
at the U.N., human rights treaty
bodies and the International
Court of Justice."
In short, the P.A.'s U.N. state-
hood bid would assist the attain-
ment of the Palestinian objective
to increase Israel's isolation in
the world. It would bolster the
movements to delegitimize,
demonize and boycott Israel.
Indeed, the P.A. would even be
in a position to claim that Israel
is now illegally "occupying" sov-
ereign Palestinian land. This, in
turn, would give the Arab states
an excuse to launch new wars,
perhaps even an all-out war
against Israel, as they did in
1948.
Short of a genuine agreement
that ends further Palestinian
claims against Israel, recognizes
Israel as the homeland of the
Jewish people, ends the pro-
motion of hatred and violence
against Israel in P.A. schools,
news media and speeches, and

terminates the P.A. alliance with
Hamas, a Palestinian state will of
necessity be yet another Mideast
terrorist state.
It would also be an interna-
tional beggar state, as the P.A. is
already, despite the infusion of
the world's highest per-capita lev-
els of international aid.
A Palestinian state created by
the U.N. would not produce a dif-
ferent result. But it would ensure
that Palestinian refusal to reach a
real peace agreement with Israel
will be prolonged and indulged
as well as ensure continued
Palestinian terrorism and incite-
ment.

Community

Friends of Israel are encouraged
to sign an online petition calling
on United Nations members to
reject the Palestinian Authority's
upcoming unilateral declaration of
independence. The Palestinian move
counters efforts to bring Israelis and
Palestinians back to the negotiating
table, violates the previously signed
Oslo Accords and could lead to renewed
violence in the region. To sign the
petition, go to: https://jcrcny.wufoo.com/

declared-palestine/.
