The club includes everyone from student pilots with very few flying hours to experienced pilots with hundreds of thousands of hours; pilots who fly small planes and some who can even fly a Boeing 747. The beauty of gathering, they say, is the chance to learn from each other's experiences. "We have had some members who've crashed, unfortunately, but thankfully everyone survived," Feldman said. "I once had an engine that was sputtering, and we ended up making a precautionary landing in Lansing. Another time, my landing gear would only go up half way and the motor burned out." The Federal Aviation Administration requires small plane owners to pass an annual inspection. While a private pilot license does not expire, pilots are also required to go up with an instruc- tor every two years to demonstrate their proficiency. One Chai Flyer who was not identi- fied actually got a license to conquer the fear of flying. Some members have taken their children and grandchildren on flights. Others have family mem- bers who prefer not to take the risk. "So far, I have not been permitted to take any of my grandchildren (ages 5-12) on more than a taxi," Schwartz admits. But she and the other Chai Flyers say they feel perfectly safe and confi- dent in mid-air; there's no place else they'd rather be. "It's not like driving a car because when you drive a car the other cars are so close to you. In the air, if a plane gets within half a mile of you, that's close," Schwartz explains. "We're dedicated to aviation, safety and fun. We say we're closer to God attitudi- nally." I I To become a member of the Chai Flyers or for more information, email: thechaiflyers©gmail.com .
