Send a New Year's Gift Tray! AMERICAN Gourmet CANISTERS or TRAYS DR. IRVING LEVITT, 91, died on Sept. 2, 2011, surrounded by his fam- ily. He was born in Detroit in 1920 to Katie and Isaac Levitt. He grew up in Detroit and graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1943. After serving as a phy- sician and officer in the Army during World War II, he went on to complete a residency in pediatric medicine. Dr. Levitt practiced pediatrics on the east side of Detroit, where he used his flu- ency in Spanish and Italian to put his immigrant patients at ease. He and his wife enjoyed collect- ing American art. In 1971, Dr. Levitt left the practice of medicine and the couple moved from Southfield to mid- town Manhattan, where he became a full-time art dealer. After a very rewarding five years in New York, they returned to the Detroit area, where Dr. Levitt resumed the practice of pediat- rics until his retirement in 1985. During retirement, he and Shirley enjoyed traveling with friends and attending classes at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Always a "Michigan man" he called his friends on Saturday afternoons and second- guessed the Michigan football coaches. His greatest pleasures came from his family and close friends. In 2006, Iry and Shirley said goodbye to their many friends in the Detroit area and moved to Atlanta to be closer to two of their children and their grandchil- dren. He is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley; their children, Susan (Rupert) Barkoff, Dr. Richard (Meryl) Levitt and Donald (Julia) Levitt; their grandchildren, Stuart (Alison) Barkoff, Jeffrey (Dr. Marla) Barkoff, Dr. Llsa (Tyler) Wright, Benjamin Levitt and Aaron Levitt; and four great-grandchildren. Dr. Levitt's sister, Louise (Morris) Berris, predeceased him. Contributions may be made to Hadassah or a charity of one's choice. Sign the online guestbook at www. edressler.com .
