Maccabi
cagers fill
the hoop,
grab the
gold.

Steve Stein
Contributing Writer

T

he Detroit 14U boys basket-
ball team was unstoppable at
the JCC Maccabi Games held
in Springfield, Mass.
Coach Barry Bershad's squad won
all seven games it played and the
gold medal, averaging an amazing 73
points per game. High school rules
were used, so teams played four eight-
minute quarters.
Off the court, Bershad and his nine
players got an up-close look at the
aftermath of an even more potent
unstoppable force.
"Our bus ride to the arena each day
took us right through an area that
was hit by the (June 1) tornado in
Springfield:' Bershad said. "All we saw
was devastation. It was unbelievable."
The Springfield Maccabi Games
went on as scheduled despite the tor-
nado, which injured an estimated 300
and caused millions of dollars in dam-
age in Massachusetts' third-largest
city, a community of 150,000.
Seventeen teams competed in 14U
boys basketball. Nine played for med-
als after the qualifying round. Detroit
beat Springfield 82-66 in the gold-
medal game. It was Detroit's seventh
game in four days.
"We weren't the biggest or strongest
team there, but we could put the ball
in the basket:' Bershad said. "We had

some great players:'
Point guard Jon Radner ran Detroit's
high-powered offense and scored
almost at will. The incoming Berkley
High School freshman poured in 36
points in Detroit's win over Denver in
the qualifying round.
"People who watched our games
raved about Jon's play:' Bershad said.
Sammy Stern came up big for
Detroit in the gold-medal game, scor-
ing 20 points and pulling down 20
rebounds.
Also on the Detroit team were Josh
Bender, Ben Brockmeyer-Bernard,
Dylan Bressler, Jeremy Cohn, Sander
Eizen, Alex Sandberg and Ryan
Tokowitz.
Bershad has been a Maccabi boys
basketball coach for "13 or 14 years:'
he said, and this was his first gold
medal. He'd never even taken a team
to the championship game before this
year.
"Needless to say, it was a special
time he said.

Volleyball Wins Silver
Six volleyball players from Detroit
joined with four from Mid-
Westchester, N.Y., to form a team
called DTNY that won a silver medal
at the Springfield Maccabi Games.
Coach Bradley Steel of Detroit said
he used a theme of "smile and
breathe" to bring the two delegations
together.
