Rabbi's Teachings
Focus of Lunch and Learn
Adat Shalom Synagogue in
Farmington Hills hosts a three-part
lunchtime learning series titled "The
Purpose of Life Is To Be Happy." Rabbi
Aaron Bergman will lead it 11:45
a.m.-1 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 12, 19 and
26.
Bergman will focus on the teach-
ings and life of Rabbi Nachman of
Bratslov, great-grandson of Chassidic
movement founder "Bal Shem Tov."
The class will take a look at Rabbi
Nachman's teachings and stories
on joy, even amidst despair. They
will also sing some of his melodies
because he believed that music can
elevate the soul.
Participants may bring a dairy
lunch. Drinks and dessert provided.
Free. Respond by the preceding Friday
to Sheila Lederman, (248) 851-5100,
ext. 246 or slederman@adatshalom.

9-11 Steel Remnant
Comes To Birmingham
Lilly Epstein Stotland, general man-
ager of Vesco Oil, along with her fam-
ily and the city of Birmingham, will
unveil and dedicate a steel remnant
from the World Trade Center in mem-
ory of those who lost their lives on
9-11 and honor the sacrifices made
by individuals and families impacted
by the tragedy. The event will be at 11
a.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Adams
Fire Station, 572 S. Adams Road,
Birmingham.
Southfield-based Vesco Oil's Marjory
and Donald Epstein Family Charitable
Foundation funded the costs of trans-
porting the steel remnant and the
creation of the memorial.
Stotland has a personal, vested
interest in the project. She was liv-
ing in New York City and working
at Goldman Sachs (85 Broad St.) on
Sept. 11, 2001. Working a few blocks
away, she was trapped when the World
Trade Center towers collapsed.
Arm in arm with a colleague and
covered in dust, they made their way
out of the rubble. Witnessing the day's
events had a profound and lasting
effect on her life, and led her to return
to Michigan to be closer to her family.
Reading Tutors Learn
How They Can Help
"Why Volunteer?" will be the focus of
a Fall Literacy Volunteer Appreciation
Program hosted by the Detroit Jewish
Coalition for Literacy (DJCL) from
10 a.m.-noon Thursday, Sept. 15,
at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in
Southfield.
Barry Rubin, a retired elementary
school principal and education con-
sultant for Oakland Schools, will share
his insights about the appropriate and
helpful roles volunteers can perform
in a school, and discuss what volun-
teers can do to optimize their chances
of playing a meaningful part in a
student's life.
Seasoned DJCL volunteers will
also share their experiences during
the program, and a light continental
breakfast will be served.
The DJCL conducts training work-
shops and provides resources for its
volunteer tutors. Jewish Community
Relations Council board members
Ruth Grey and Sue Birnholtz are co-
chairs of the DJCL.
To register, contact DJCL Project
Coordinator Linda Foster at the JCRC
office, (248) 642-2656, or via email at
foster@jfmd.org.
