Vacationing with the grandkids to the
"happiest place on Earth."
Shelli Liebman Dorfman
Contributing Writer
W
ith their children now in
their 20s and 30s, it's been
many years since Michele
and David Kaplan willingly sat next to
a baby on a plane.
But last April, the Farmington Hills
couple actually requested to be in
the same row as a 6-month-old and
his two young sisters on a flight to
Orlando and Walt Disney World.
The Kaplans were traveling with
their daughter and son-in-law, Marisa
and Hector Hernandez of West
Bloomfield, and their children, Alexa,
6, Ariella, 4, and Ethan, then 6 months,
along with the Kaplans' son, Michael,
of Chicago.
"We did numerous trips with our
three children [including son Todd of
Chicago] while they were growing up
— including Disney:' Michele Kaplan
said.
"We promised to take Alexa and
Ariella. We began planning the trip
earlier and discovered Marisa was
expecting Ethan." As soon as he was
old enough, she said, "There were no
other considerations; we wanted to see
their reactions and excitement:'
Vacationing with five adults had its
great advantages.
"When we went as a family with
the grandchildren, their parents
disciplined:' Kaplan said. "We saw
meltdowns and exhaustion, but the
excitement in their eyes told its own
story. The parades, characters, rides;
it's magical there, like no other place in
the world:'
Kaplan's own parents, Faye and
Lou Damraur of West Bloomfield,
took her children on trips to Toronto
and Tamarack Camps' Bubbie-Zaydie
Family Camp when they were young.
Marisa Hernandez said, "I remem-
ber visiting my dad's parents (the late
Goldie and the late Phil Kaplan) in
California and going to Disneyland
with them. I remember taking
walks with my Papa Phil to look for
golf balls every morning. He would tell
me about his childhood and my dad's
childhood."
Kaplan has a book of photos that
she had printed and bound to remem-
ber the trip, and the whole family has
new memories.
"My kids were so excited when they
came back from Disney:' Hernandez
said. "They loved it and were so grate-
ful to be able to spend quality time
with Gia and Papa. They asked my
parents, 'What are we doing on our
next vacation? How about a Disney
cruise?'
"It meant so much more to me to do
the family trip with my parents and
my kids," she said. "Watching my kids'
reaction was something to treasure,
and my parents being a part of it was
incredibly moving. At times I wasn't
sure who was having more fun: my
parents or the kids:'
Even so, Hernandez said, "On the
way there we all sat together on the
plane. On the way home, my parents
chose another row. My dad got the
emergency row:' she said of the sec-
tion where kids are not allowed. Li
