W.J. & Lillian Kemler SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2011 3K/5K Community Walk step out and support our Older Adults Walk Of Ages Will Remember Victims A solemn tribute to the victims of the 9-11 terrorist attacks on America will open this year's W.J. & Lillian Kemler Walk of Ages, on Sunday, Sept. 11, the 10th anniversary of the attacks. The 3K/5K Community Walk around the Eugene and Marcia Applebaum Jewish Community Campus in West Bloomfield is sponsored by the Jewish Senior Life Auxiliary to raise funds for programs to support Jewish older adults. A 9-11 commemoration program will be presented at 9:30 a.m. by the Jewish War Veterans of Shapiro/Rose Post 510. There will be a moment of silence and taps will be sounded. The walk begins at 10 a.m., rain or shine. Grand marshals this year are philan- thropists Miriam and Jack Shenkman of Farmington Hills. Grand marshal emeritus is Danny Raskin, Jewish News senior columnist. A number of celebrity walkers will participate. The walk also will feature train rides, a petting zoo and face paining for chil- dren, games and prizes. Refreshments will be served at the finish line. Participants must register and pay an entry fee of $18 per person in advance or $20 on the day of the walk; $36 in advance for families (up to two adults and four children), or 540 on walk day. Team Spirit walkers pay $118 for a team of five to nine walkers; $236 for a team of 10 to 19 walkers, and $354 for 20-plus walkers. Lawn signs to be displayed on Dedication Lane cost $180. Co-chairpersons of the walk are Auxiliary President Elaine Beresh of West Bloomfield and Pearlena Bodzin of Southfield. Community Interfaith Worship on Sept. 11 Lift Up Southfield!, an interfaith council of Southfield, will host a community interfaith worship service in observance of the 10th anniversary of the 9-11 ter- rorist attacks. The service will be held 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield. It will feature leaders and members of local Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities, including the Rev. William A. Walker from First Baptist Church of Detroit; Rabbi Joseph H. Krakoff of Shaarey Zedek; and Imam Steve Mustapha Elturk, president of the RAIN of 'AMIN located on the Eugene & Marcia Applebaum Jewish Community Campus Islamic Organization of North America. Religious Schools To Hold 'Moments Of Remembrance' The Metro Detroit Board of Jewish Educators is sponsoring "Moments of Remembrance" to commemorate the bloody terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Schools will be gathering during the morning of Sunday, Sept. 11, as part of their religious school and family educa- tion programming. Some of these pro- grams are for students only and others allow for parents to attend. Participating religious schools are Adat Shalom Synagogue; Congregations Beth Ahm, Beth Shalom, Shir Tikvah and Shaarey Zedek; Temples Beth El, Emanu-El, Kol Ami and Israel; and the Shul-Chabad Lubavitch. Day Of Service Event Remembers 9-11 In response to a call by President Obama to make 9-11 a National Day of Service and Remembrance, hundreds of Detroit-area young people will come together for a national community ser- vice weekend called Acts of Kindness. Organizations to engage volunteers for a variety of projects on Saturday, Sept. 10 and Sunday, Sept. 11, include ACCESS, the Interfaith Leadership Council, Focus:HOPE, the United Way of Southeastern Michigan and J-Serve. Operation Homefront Fundraiser On Sept. 11 On Sept. 11, a memorial will be held commemorating the victims of the 9-11 attacks, followed by a fundraiser to ben- efit Operation Homefront Michigan. The memorial and fundraiser are organized by Krav Maga Detroit, a train- ing facility for civilians, law enforcement and military in Krav Maga, the Israeli hand-to-hand combat and weapons defense system. The event will be held at its facility at 950 W. Maple in Troy. The memorial begins at 10 a.m. and will feature guest speakers, a military honor guard, a military brass band and military vehicles for viewing. A fundraiser follows from 11-3 p.m. and includes self-defense and weapons defense seminars for adults and a range of activities for the family. Proceeds will benefit military families and wounded warriors in Michigan.
