A rain garden by Rosenhaus cheers up the parking lot.
Perky Parking Lots
Creating colorful, artistic landscaping
on a palette of concrete.
W
hen Cathy Rosenhaus drives
into a parking lot, she
often gets mad. With more
than 20 years of experience in custom
landscape and hardscape design and
installation, Rosenhaus could not com-
prehend why the entryways and park-
ing lot islands of the places she visits
daily look so terrible when they could
look beautiful.
She knew that
there must be better
ways to create some-
thing affordable, pret-
ty and easy to take
care of. Challenged by
the idea, Rosenhaus
was determined to

fix these eyesores.
"When I visited my
daughter Alex in New York, we went to
the Highline Park, a sustainable series
of parks being built on top of the old
rail system in Chelsea;' she said. "I knew
I could create something that was sus-
tainable and also beautiful:'
She started researching innovative
approaches and visited shopping malls
in California that used no-mow and
low-mow varieties of turf. She saw how
the islands and areas surrounding the
lots dropped in grade, and sometimes
had a swale so the water runoff would
flow to those low areas.
In Michigan, she had to devise spe-
cific design solutions.
Rosenhaus knew she had good
concepts, but needed to make sure
they would function properly. With the
help of Wendy Fry, director of sustain-
ability and landscape architecture for
Mannik and Smith (an internationally
renowned firm that designed Ford
World Headquarters' Green Roofs), she
worked to develop a series of parking
lot islands.
Cathy needed her designs to be
affordable enough for shopping centers
to hire her. She also wanted the gardens
to be self-sustaining, and use the kinds
of plants that make her residential
landscaping so attractive.
