Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine,
one of the coaches on NBC's new hit
singing competition The Voice, grew
up with a Protestant mother (whose
father was Jewish) and a Jewish father.
"Dad spiked in a little Judaism," he
told London's Jewish Chronicle about
his religious upbringing. "But it wasn't
the kind of thing he wanted to force
on me. ... You have to let kids figure
out what they want to do for them-
selves. My father did ask me whether
I wanted a bar mitzvah, and I said
no." Surrounded by Jewish friends,
Levine said he "felt as though a lot of
kids were trying to cash in. They were
trying to make a bunch of money, and
that's fine. I just don't think it's the
most respectful way to deal with God
and beliefs and years and years and
years of cultural heritage."
