Jewish War Veterans
Aids Vets And Students
We are members of the Jewish War
Veterans of America. We have served
this country honorably and faith-
fully, and many of us earned combat
decorations serving in the Army, Navy,
Marine Corps and the Air Force.
We, here in the Detroit area, under-
write aid to the armed forces of the
United States and veterans' needs in
hospitals, nursing facilities and else-
where.
We also support a scholarship pro-
gram for any high school senior from
Michigan who enrolls in a Michigan
university and has a family member
who is, or was, a veteran of our armed
forces. We also stand honor guard to
our fallen comrades. These are just a
few of the many services we provide.
Yet, it's disappointing at the number
of our Detroit-area citizens that have
never heard of us or the many services
we provide.
We do all these things in spite of our
dwindling numbers due to deceased
members and those that move away
from the area to another state; we are
not getting the replacement veterans
necessary to continue our full level of
services.
We would reach out to all our
American Jewish war veteran com-
rades and ask them to consider join-
ing this fine organization for just $60
a year and share our meetings with
us. They will meet some of the finest
people in the state of Michigan.
Proper Procedure Ignored
In Sale Of Eagle School
The circumstances surrounding
the sale of Eagle Elementary by the
Farmington Public Schools (FPS) are
indeed circumspect ("All Eyes On
Eagle Aug. 11, page 1).
In a strikingly similar case, the
commissioner of education in New
York annulled the sale of a school by a
school district that favored one buyer
to the exclusion of others and failed to
take appropriate steps to yield the best
price for the property.
In that case, the commissioner
wrote that the school board "as pub-
lic trustee of the property, was obli-
gated to engage in a careful delibera-
tive process" to determine whether
the one bid was the best the district
could do.
There, it was deemed unacceptable
that the district didn't allow enough
time to publicize the sale and allow
for bids.
The failings of our local district
are even more flagrant: FPS never
publicized the sale of Eagle or put
out the property for bids.
Just as the deal in New York was
scrubbed because the board was
found to have abused its fiduciary
trust in rushing through a sale dis-
criminatorily favoring one buyer,
the FPS' sweetheart deal, exclusively
protecting one bid while represent-
ing that the school was not for sale,
also seems to run afoul of legal and
fiduciary standards.
