Pro-Israel Interfaith
Rally In Grand Rapids
Pro-Israel supporters from all over the
state will unite in Grand Rapids Thursday,
Aug. 25, for an interfaith solidarity rally,
"America & Israel Standing Together." The
rally begins at 5:30 p.m. at Rosa Parks
Circle in downtown Grand Rapids and
will focus on the bonds of friendship and
important political, military, religious and
economic ties between the U.S. and Israel.
Keynoting the rally will be Pete
Hoekstra, former Congressman from the
west side of the state and chairman of the
House Select Committee on Intelligence.
Hoekstra recently announced his bid for
the Senate. Sharing the marquis with
Hoekstra will be Elliott Chodoff, a politi-
cal and military analyst specializing in the
Mideast and the global war on terrorism
and a major in the Israel Defense Forces
(IDF) Reserves. Also addressing the rally
will be Rabbi Michael Schadick of Temple
Emanuel in Grand Rapids and Pastor
Thomas Wilson of Word of Faith Christian
Center. The emcee of the event will be
Vietnam veteran Colonel Dennis Gillem,
host of The Frontlines of Freedom radio
show broadcast on WJRW 1340.
The rally is open to the public and will
include music, vendors and other informa-

Adat Shalom Early Childhood
Classes Are Open For Fall
Julie Eisman, director of the Early Childhood
Center at Adat Shalom Synagogue in
Farmington Hills, has announced that there
are limited openings in both preschool and

kindergarten classes for the fall. Two-, three-
and five-day morning programs, as well as
five full-days, are open to children, ages 2-6.
In addition to the preschool classes
and licensed kindergarten, Adat Shalom
offers a "Breakfast Club"
and extended care for
families who need longer
hours.

for those 20-30 months,
have been specially
designed for a very
young child's first

"Parent-Toddler" classes
are open to those 16 months to 21/2 years.
Youngsters 6 months to age 3 will enjoy
"Rockin' Robin" music class along with
mom, dad or a grandparent.

Temple Beth El
Adult Ed Classes
Temple Beth El's adult education classes
begin Wednesday, Sept. 7.
Lea Beurer will teach two Advanced
Hebrew classes, Wednesday mornings at
10:30 a.m. and Conversational Hebrew
Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. Cost is $50
for temple members and $75 for others.
Beurer will also lead an ongoing study
of the Torah text on Wednesday mornings,
beginning Sept. 7 at 9:30 a.m. No Hebrew
reading is required. $35 for members and
$50 for others.
Beginning Saturday, Sept. 10, at 12:15
p.m. following Shabbat services, Rabbi
Daniel Syme and Keren Alpert, rabbinic
Expressive/intuitive artist and life coach

Hills will hold her first open house and
expressive art exhibition of student work
3-6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, at the Journey
Within Art Studio, 29623 Northwestern
Hwy., Southfield.
"In this art studio, students begin to
explore the greatest asset they are born
with — their inner all-knowing intui-
tive voice Gordon-Michaeli said. "This
discovery is done through their own art-
work. We are multilayered beings with
an entire universe inside us that is most
often ignored. This can be developed
into a powerful inner guide from whom
we draw confidence and strength.
"There is no need to know how to
paint or draw — all the art is expressive.
The students are encouraged to set per-
sonal goals and discussions are a part of
the process. The artist gives the instruc-

to Judaism" seminar. Couples are encour-
aged to take this seminar together and will
be charged only one fee. Class fees are $75
for members and $95 for others.
Alpert will lead a monthly Lunar Learn

Can't Remember How to Bless the Torah."
Participants will learn to bless and dress
the Torah and receive a CD and copies of
the blessing in Hebrew and in translitera-
tion. The class is perfect for those who have
an upcoming bar or bat mitzvah in the
family. Cost of the 10:30 a.m. class is $6.13.

Israeli Ambassador
To Speak At Beth El
Israeli Ambassador Chaim Koren will dis-
cuss "The Arab Spring, the Palestinians
and Israel: What Next?" at Temple Beth El
in Bloomfield Township on Tuesday, Sept.
6, at 7:30 p.m.
Koren is an expert on
the history of the Middle
East and Islam and has
lectured extensively at
the University of Haifa
and at Israel's National
Defense College. The

ing Detroit as part of a tour of Jewish corn-
tion and the painting begins. There are

The artist works with psychiatrist Dr.
Dorit Ben-Ami, who has a practice in
Southfield.
Gordon-Michaeli lived in Israel for 22
years as an accomplished artist with a
client list that includes a former Israeli
prime minister as well as cabinet mem-
bers of the Israeli government. Her art-
work has been published multiple times
in the Israeli version of Architectural
Digest, known as Binyan V'Diyur. She
also was the "house" artist for several
well-known Israeli architectural design-
ers, including Michael "Mildd" Horowitz,
Dani Kaplan and Oded Lavi. She spent
years learning and developing coaching
techniques using the art as a tool for
discovery.

Sen. Lieberman Guests
On Local Radio Show
Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., will be the
guest of Herschel Finman on the Jewish
Hour radio program Sunday, Aug. 28, at 11
a.m. on WLQV 1500 AM. The show will be
archived on www.rabbifinman.com .
Lieberman will speak about his new
book The Gift of Rest, which focuses on the
senator's appreciation for Shabbat obser-
vance and how it has helped his political
career.
Hillel Day School
Renames Golf Outing
The Hillel Day School Steven Zack
Memorial Golf Classic will be held on
Monday, Sept. 12, at Knollwood Country
Club. The event has been renamed to
honor the memory of Steven Zack, a parent
of Hillel students who served on the board
of trustees and was chair of the golf classic
for six years. He was dedicated to the suc-
cess and goal of the outing: to raise money
for tuition assistance in order to make a
Hillel education possible to families who
would otherwise not be able to afford one.
Registration and lunch begin at noon
with a 1 p.m. shotgun start with cocktails,
dinner and awards following golf.
