U
niversity of Michigan Hillel,
now beginning its 86th year,
is shaped by the students
responsible for the depth and breadth
of its programming and by a long
tradition of talented staff who work
with them.
Last year, 2010-11 Berman Fellows
Allie Conn and Michael Spitulnik
helped U-M Hillel overcome the chal-
lenge of a smaller staff by exceeding
the programming level of the previ-
ous year. This included the forma-
tion of new student groups: Makom
Intra-Jewish Dialogue, Health and
Wellness, and Jewish Perspectives on
Globalization as well as the implemen-
tation of a new engagement strategy
(jNET) and the expansion of the
Kaufman Intramural Sports Program.
Two new assistant directors arrived
this summer. Rabbi Seth Winberg of
Vancouver, Canada, is assistant direc-
tor of religious life and education, and
Davey Rosen of Franklin is assistant
director of student leadership and
programming.
Winberg brings a deep passion
for bringing diverse Jews together,
interfaith work, community service
and Jewish Orthodox feminism. With
ordination from Yeshivat Chovevei
Torah Rabbinical School, a master's
degree from Yeshiva University and
two years of training at Hebrew Union
College, he has a tremendous capacity
to engage students from all aspects of
Jewish life and infuse U-M Hillel with
Jewish content in a meaningful, acces-
sible way.
He led one of four spring 2011 U-M
Hillel Taglit Birthright Israel trips and,
in July, he moved to Ann Arbor with
his wife, Shoshie Lockshin, and two
children, Hadas and Ezra.
Rosen has returned to Michigan
after 12 years of developing an exten-
sive resume in Jewish communal work
across America. He holds a master's
degree in informal and communal
Jewish education, a bachelor's degree
in Jewish history from the University
of Judaism, and has worked in both
the Camp Ramah and Young Judaea
systems developing an innovative
approach to informal Jewish education.
He also is an accomplished singer-
songwriter who will use his talent and
creative energy to engage students.
"I'm looking forward to working
and growing with our diverse student
population and joining a leadership
team committed to creating a vibrant
and inclusive Jewish community,"
Rosen said.
Tilly Shames, U-M Hillel associate
director, will be transitioning into the
executive director role during winter
2012, as Michael Brooks takes his sab-
batical. He will return as director of
institutional advancement. Li
