Professor Howard Lupovitch was a guest for the IRP's annual Harry Kirsch Lecture. FDR, Churchill and Thomas Jefferson. IRP members also read a novel by Ayn Rand, who worshipped at the altar of human reason and capitalism (during her funeral, a huge floral arrangement shaped like a dollar sign was famously set near her casket). IRP members hated the book, and they didn't like Ayn Rand, either, Ellenbogen says. One even labeled her "a dictator:' Ellenbogen, a Detroit native and retired "socially responsible stockbroker:' favors IRP groups that focus on classi- cal music (he loves Shostakovich) and finance; his wife prefers movies and art. So it's spicy, but it works because there's a great deal of camaraderie, too. "IRP is like a family," says LoPatin, a Detroit native and still a very busy accountant with two sons, five grand- children and a long, active history in Jewish organizations. "It's like a home away from home': Ellenbogen adds. And for some, IRP offers that little something extra. "Yes, romance has budded in the IRP ranks': says Teviah Estrin of Huntington Woods. Estrin is a native of Windsor who saw an ad about the IRP in the Jewish News. A retired attorney, he settled in the United States, and he and his wife have five children who live in Chicago, New York and Israel. Estrin, too, found himself drawn to the IRP as though by forces beyond his own will. He wasn't really interested in history, but somehow he came to an IRP group about history and the rest is, well, history. These days, Estrin loves the IRP or, as he puts it, "They have a way of sucking you in." Estrin likes the IRP because it's self- facilitated, it's ongoing and it allows members to participate in whatever interests them. "It's more like a club': he says, "and there's continuity." The membership is diverse, though. Those who are not Jewish, retired or for- mer professionals are welcome, and even Ayn Rand devotees wouldn't be turned away. So is there any chance the IRP could get too big? "Don't worry,' LoPatin says. "We can handle the success."
