ake-A-Wish has an
annual charity event called
WAM (Wish-A-Mile)
that only takes place in Michigan.
Every year near the end of July, 700
to 800 bicycle riders take off from
Traverse City and ride to Chelsea —
310 miles over three days.
This year, $1.8 million was raised to
provide a wish come true for children
who have life-threatening illnesses.
Each wish costs around $7,500, offer-
ing the kids and their families a brief
opportunity to forget about the tragic
situation that they endure daily.
For the past nine years, I have had
the fortune to be on Team Alex, named
in memory of Alex Graham, 17, of West
Bloomfield, who died of bone cancer in
1999.
During the ride, we endure extreme
heat, rain, wind, loose gravel and miles
of steep hills while trying to avoid fast-
moving traffic. For many of us, this will
be the most physically and mentally
challenging weekend we will ever have.

For the past nine years, my son
Jared has watched me ride in to the
finish. In 2008, he watched his brother
Dylan also complete the ride. I have
always thought of Jared during these
rides as he is not able to ride a bike.
Jared was born with a rare condition
called dysgenisys of the corpus calla-
som, which basically means that most
of the nerve fibers that connect the left
and right hemisphere of the brain are
missing. This challenges Jared in every
developmental area because process-
ing information is slow as it tries to
find alternate routes to move back and
forth. Jared once explained that he
knows what he would like to do, but
his body just won't allow it, and other
times it will just take much longer.
This condition keeps him from hav-
ing enough balance to ride a bike. His
speech is delayed while information
is processed slowly, causing him over
time to become very nonverbal; social
cues are misunderstood and abstract
thoughts are difficult to understand.
All the while, Jared is very aware of
what is going on in the world around
him. This is why this condition can
