E
ric Weiss began his JCC
Maccabi Games journey in
Detroit in 2008, competing in
tennis for the host delegation.
He traveled to Westchester, N.Y., and
Richmond, Va., the past two years as a
member of the Detroit U14 boys basket-
ball team. Both times, the team made it
to the quarterfinals.
Weiss will be in Philadelphia this
month for his fourth and final Maccabi
Games. After this year, he'll be too old
to compete. He'll play for the Detroit
U16 boys basketball team. Steve Weiss,
his father, will be his coach for the third
year.
Eric Weiss would love to win a medal
in Philadelphia. But it wouldn't be the
end of the world if he doesn't.
"It's been a great experience compet-
ing against other Jewish athletes at the
Maccabi Games:' he said. "That's what
has drawn me back each year."
Some of his opponents have become
Facebook friends.
Weiss will be a sophomore this fall at
Bloomfield Hills Andover High School,
where he is a promising young player in
the boys basketball program.
Despite missing seven games last
season because of a broken foot, the
5-foot-10 point guard led the Andover
freshman team in scoring and earned
the Freshman Impact Award. He aver-
aged 17 points per game.
Detroit Maccabi delegation head
Karen Gordon said 99 Detroit athletes,
ages 13-16, have competed or will com-
pete in Maccabi Games this summer
in Israel, Philadelphia and Springfield,
Mass. The number is down from past
years, but 10 more than in 2010.
Inline hockey continues to be a popu-
lar sport for Detroit. In addition to a full
team, Detroit will have two athletes on
the Philadelphia team in Philadelphia.
Detroit inline player Ethan Weinfeld is
another four-year Maccabi athlete.
A mixed U14 boys soccer team in
Philadelphia will have three athletes
from Detroit, four from Pittsburgh, two
from Houston and one from Delaware.
Sharp-eyed soccer fans may wonder
why the team has 10 players instead
of the 11 needed to play a game. That's
because Maccabi soccer is a 7v7 sport
on a smaller-than-regulation field.
Next year's Maccabi Games sites are
Houston, Memphis and Rockland, N.Y.
Girls softball is expected to make a
comeback.
