Older adults are ready for JSL's
annual Senior Dream Cruise.

T
hey told Janet Antin it never
could be done. But she did it.
Since the elderly residents
of several Jewish Senior Life facilities
in West Bloomfield couldn't go to the
annual Woodward Dream Cruise, she
"dreamed up" a Senior Dream Cruise
and brought it to them — complete
with the type of vintage and clas-
sic cars that are driven up and down
Woodward Avenue, plus all of the
other trappings of the internationally
famous cruise.
"Everyone was
sort of skeptical
that we could pull
this off, mainly con-
vincing classic car
owners to come out
here just days before
the big Woodward
cruise, then putting
Janet Antin
together the logis-
tics to ensure a safe
cruise," said Antin. "But, thanks to our
great staff and many volunteers, we
succeeded!'
The fourth annual Senior Dream
Cruise will begin rolling at 1:30 p.m.
Tuesday, Aug. 16, around JSL's West
Bloomfield campus, mainly viewed
by the more than 500 older adults
who live at the Fleischman Residence,
Hechtman and Meer Apartments,
Danto Family Health Care Center and
those attending the Brown Adult Day
Care Program.
"The entire community is invited
to come out and join the seniors and
their families," Antin said. "We'll have
refreshments, 1950s music, a tent for
the sun, and the vehicles will be on
display after the cruise."
Such difficult projects are nothing
new for the jovial, innovative Antin of
Southfield, who has been Fleischman's
program director for nine years, and
recently also became activity profes-
sional coordinator of all JSL facilities.
Antin launched the cruise by
contacting classic car clubs. Only 16
cars came to the first Senior Cruise.
However, "word-of-mouth" spread
the news, and there were 50 cars
last year, ranging from classic Ford
Thunderbirds, Mustangs and Model Ts
and Packards to early Chevy Corvettes,
Pontiac Trans Ams and some little-
known foreign cars. Antin expects
more than 50 vehicles this year, and
about 40 volunteers will join JSL staff
members to work on the cruise weeks
in advance.

many are very nostalgic:' said Barbra
