T
wo of the Detroit Jewish com-
munity's top educators have
joined Frankel Jewish Academy
(FJA). Rabbi S. Robert Morais, former
director of education at Temple Israel
of West Bloomfield, and Chaye Kohl,
former director of education at Akiva
Hebrew Day School in Southfield, begin
their work at FJA this fall.
Kohl will join the
English language fac-
ulty as an instructor in
writing and literature.
She also will assume
administrative duties
related to Zionist
education and Israel
Chaye Kohl
programming.
Rabbi Morais will
serve, along with
longtime FJA staff
member Lisa Gilan, as
FJA's new directors of
admission.
FJA Head of School
Rabbi Eric Grossman
has worked closely with
Rabbi Morals
both educators through
his involvement in
Detroit's Jewish education community
"I have long been friends as well as col-
leagues with Rabbi Morais and Ms. Kohl,
and I have great respect for their educa-
tional and Jewish acumen as well as their
personal warmth and integrity,' he said.
"When the opportunity arose for them
to join our team I was thrilled that they
could bring their extensive skills and
talents to the Academy"
Kohl taught English at Yeshivah of
Flatbush High School for 20 years. A
senior administrator for the past decade
at the Frisch School in New Jersey, at
Hillel in North Miami Beach and at
Akiva, she looks forward to being in the
classroom again.
"I am excited to join Frankel Jewish
Academy, where faculty collaboration
and academic excellence are of para-
mount importance," she said, "and to be
part of a learning community commit-
ted to educating and mentoring young
people as they prepare for their adult life
as Jews."
Morais has been involved with Jewish
education for 20 years as a teacher,
pulpit rabbi and administrator. He
served as executive director of Hillel in
Rochester, N.Y., taking his work with
Jewish youth to the college level.
"I am looking forward to helping fami-
lies fully understand and appreciate the
excellent Jewish education that is available
at FJA," he said. "I am very excited to be
given the opportunity to work with such
wonderful staff, students and teachers."

nterested in a new approach to
Jewish learning? Try a "Taste of
Melton" sample class from 7-8:30
p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the Max
M. Fisher Federation Building, 6735
Telegraph, Bloomfield Township.
Federation's Alliance for Jewish
Education sponsors the local Florence
Melton Adult Mini-School, which has
enriched the lives of more than 800
Jews in Metropolitan Detroit.
Melton instructors will teach the
sample lessons and Judy Loebl, Mellon
director, will answer questions.
Developed at Hebrew University
of Jerusalem, Melton brings together
adult learners from all backgrounds
to explore classic Jewish sources in an
intellectually stimulating, non-denom-
inational environment. There are
no tests or homework. The Florence
Melton Adult Mini-school is open to
any member of the Jewish community.
The two-year course meets 30 weeks
per year with faculty who encourage
group discussion and exploration.
New classes will be offered this fall
for traditional Melton and Melton PEP
(Parent Education Program for parents
of newborn through sixth grade).
Traditional Melton will meet Tuesday
evenings at the Federation building,
Wednesday mornings at the Jewish
Community Center in West Bloomfield
and Wednesday evenings at the Jewish
Community Center, in Oak Park. Melton
PEP will meet on Monday mornings at
Hillel Day School in Farmington Hills.
Because cost may be prohibitive
for some people, Federation is offer-
ing partial scholarships and payment
plans for anyone who asks.
The Florence Melton Adult Mini-
School also is sponsored by the Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan
Detroit and is hosted by Temple Israel,
Temple Beth El and Hillel Day School
of Metropolitan Detroit.
