STORY ON PAGE 10 1942 - 2011 Covering and Connecting Jewish Detroit Every Week 8 08805 33363 wo Jewish community members are the plaintiffs in a lawsuit filed July 29 against the Farmington Public Schools and-its board of education, seek- ing an injunction to halt the sale of the former Eagle Elementary School building to the Islamic Cultural Association (ICA). The case has garnered headlines because of a conten- tious June 14 school board meeting where it unanimously approved the sale. At the meeting, charges of anti-Muslim racism against some of the opponents of the sale were made by the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) and the Michigan Anti-Defamation League (ADL). These thoughts were echoed by a representative of the Michigan office of the Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and some private individuals. Opponents of the sale denied the charges, claiming they had not adequately been informed of the process and the board had violated its own rules as well as its responsibility to the community. Opponents threatened both a lawsuit and a campaign to recall board members. Farmington Hills residents Eugene Greenstein and Melvyn C. Sternberg — who both live near the former school at 14 Mile and Middlebelt in West Bloomfield — are named as plaintiffs in the suit filed in Oakland County Circuit Court. The suit will be heard by Judge Rae Lee Chabot. Sternberg is identified in the suit as a "real estate pro- fessional" who contacted the school district on behalf of potential buyers of the property.
