Arrangements by Ira Kaufman Chapel. MICHAEL P. COHEN, former Detroiter of Atlanta, Ga., died July 30, 2011. When he was growing up, his family were active, founding members of Adat Shalom Synagogue. Mr. Cohen graduated from Wayne State University and earned a master of social work from the University of Michigan. He and his wife, Stephanie (Shapiro), who predeceased him, resided in the Chicago area for many years, where he was a social worker and administrator for Family Service and Mental Center of South Cook County. The Cohens lived in Syracuse, N.Y., and San Antonio, Texas, between 1989 and 1998, where Mr. Cohen was the director of Syracuse Jewish Family Service and Jewish Family Service of San Antonio. In 1998, the Cohens moved to Atlanta to live closer to their children. Mr. Cohen worked for the State of Georgia's Division of Family & Children Services from 1998 to 2006 and headed the Friends of Kids in Foster Care pro- gram. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Miriam and Michael Salpeter; son and daughter-in-law, David and Tracy Cohen; grandchildren Daniel, Benjamin, and Nathan Salpeter and Hannah and Carson Cohen, all of Atlanta; brother and sister-in-law, Sheldon Cohen and Mary Miller of Pittsburgh, Pa.; niece, Choi Palms-Cohen of Detroit.
