Doctor And War Hero

D

r. Aubrey Goldman, 99, of
Bloomfield Hills, died July 24,
2011.
He was born Sept. 2, 1911, the third
of four children of Harry and Sophia
Goldman of Detroit.
He graduated from Northeastern High
School and went on to University of
Michigan School of Architecture, where
he studied for one year. He excelled in
drafting and rendering but felt that he
lacked inspiration in design sufficient for
a successful career in architecture dur-
ing a global depression. He returned to
Detroit, where he attended City College
(later Wayne State University) and com-
pleted requirements to enter the medical
school in the fall of 1935, where his older
brother, Perry, was an upperclassman.
After only six weeks of medical school
classes, Aubrey had to drop out of school
due to the death of his father, a pharma-
cist, to run Goldman Brothers Drug Store.
He continued to manage the pharmacy
for several years until he could re-enter
medical school and complete his stud-
ies and internship at Detroit Receiving
Hospital just in time to enlist in the
Army to serve during World War II. His

first overseas posting was in Swindon,
England, where he was preparing to join a
hospital and collecting company in North
Africa. He landed in Algeria and moved
east to Tunisia, where he served most of
1942 in the vicinity of Tunis.
Capt. Goldman was trans-
ferred to the 36th Texas
Infantry Division in time
for the invasion of Italy. He
landed at Salerno serving
as a battalion surgeon for
the duration of the Italian
campaign, driving the
Amalfi Drive in blackout,
observing the eruption of
Mt. Vesuvius and failing to
get his aid station across the Dr. Aubrey
Rapido River at the battle of
Montecassino. In December
1943, he was awarded the Silver Star for
gallantry in action evacuating his aid
station under heavy enemy fire without
concern for his own safety.
Capt. Goldman continued forward with
the 36th Division all the way to Rome.
Award of the Silver Star as well as two
Bronze Stars meant that Aubrey would
be promoted to major and rotated home

to complete his military service at Ft.
Blanding in Florida.
On leave to Detroit, he was introduced
to Shirley Siegel, fell in love and mar-
ried her on Nov. 25, 1945, only 10 days
after Shirley's 23rd birthday. Shirley was
trained in modern dance
and physical education and
worked as a gym teacher in
the Detroit public schools. She
ended that career to be a full-
time mother to a son, Howard,
born in 1949 and a daughter,
Beth, born in 1951.
Aubrey separated from
the service and began a
practice in general internal
medicine, first at the Detroit
Goldman
VA Hospital then in private
practice in the Kales Building
and later in northwest Detroit. He was a
member of the inaugural medical staff
of Sinai Hospital, where he served for
many years as chair of the Drug and
Formulary Committee. He retired from
full-time practice at age 75 and continued
in various part time medical activities
for another decade. At about the same
time as he retired, he began to paint in
