The marker, however, is
owned by the State Historical
Commission, which has decided
to replace, not repair it, accord-
ing to chair Ed Surovell. He said
the commission wants to ensure
the new marker is better able to
withstand the weather than the
one that was vandalized. Surovell
is collaborating closely with U-M
officials on the replacement pro-
cess.
"We hope to have it replaced in
about two months," he said.
Right now, police don't have
any leads and are requesting that
witnesses to the vandalism come
forward and help to identify the
suspects. Those with information

the U-M Anonymous Tip Line at
(800) 863-1355.
According to Laura Ashlee,
historian and communications
liaison at the State Historic
Preservation Office, the vandals
face a penalty of double the cost of
repairing or replacing the marker
— a fine of $500-$5,000 — as
well as up to 93 days in jail.

Israel Foresees Gazan

Jerusalem (JTA) — Palestinian
rockets will hit Tel Aviv in any
future conflict with Gaza, Israel's
civil defense minister said.
Matan Vilnai, opening an
international missile-defense
conference outside Israel's big-
gest city, said Monday enemies
such as Hamas and Hezbollah,
were racing to improve the
reach of their rockets.
"In the next conflict with Gaza,
even if it at a much lower inten-
sity than a war, missiles will fall
on Gush Dan — for all purpos-
es, inside Tel Aviv," Vilnai said.
He outlined Israel's counter-
measures, which include mis-
sile interceptors, civilian bomb
shelters and a deterrent posture
signaling readiness to retaliate
hard for attacks.
Yet Israel remained chal-
lenged by its geographical
smallness and multiplicity of
foes, Vilnai said.
"There is no country in the
world that is threatened like the
State of Israel;' he said. "The
only country that approximates
it is South Korea."
