Friendship Circle of Michigan, a
support system for children with
special needs and their families
located in West Bloomfield, is one
Metro Detroit organization that uses
the program. Everyone at Friendship
Circle has the chance to work in the
garden, whether it be planting, har-
vesting, washing the produce or eat-
ing the finished product.
Like the Dunn family, Friendship
Circle also had a recent harvest that
doubled as a garden tasting. The kids
at Friendship Circle picked lettuce,
spinach, basil and parsley and helped
Shapiro Havis plant some fragrant
herbs such as pineapple mint and
lavender as well as hot peppers.
Even those who had never before
gardened benefited from the fresh
air and experience, especially 5-year-
olds Marnie Jacobs and Chaya
Schectman of West Bloomfield.
Marnie helps out in her family's gar-
den at home every summer, so she
was eager to plant lavender, melon

and hot peppers and was a natural
at picking lettuce. Chaya had little
experience, but took full advantage
of TheraGardens' entire visit. With
the help of Shapiro Havis and Yuval
Kohn, 11, of Bingham Farms (Chaya's
volunteer helper), she learned how
to plant pineapple mint and hot
peppers, picked and washed lettuce
and mixed the vegetables to make
the salad. Chaya and Yuval had so
much fun they plan to help out at the
Friendship Circle garden for the rest
of the summer.
If you would like to experience
TheraGardens, visit Franklin Grill
and Tavern in Franklin. The chef
cooks with fresh herbs picked from
the garden next to the restaurant's
outdoor dining patio. Stop by and see
the garden for yourself — you may
be inspired to start your own! II
