or several weeks, the front lawn of Julie and Jason Bass' modest Oak Park
home was a crime scene. The alleged crime: planting fresh vegetables.
City officials said the Bass' organic garden, now thriving in five raised
beds in the front yard of their Dartmouth Street property, violates a vaguely
worded ordinance that reads, "All unpaved portions of the site shall be planted

Bleak jobs report offers little hope
for the unemployed.

f you're out of work, finding a job can seem as elusive as
finding the proverbial needle in a haystack (and about
as likely). Unfortunately, the labor market isn't expected
to improve any time soon.
On July 8, the government reported only a paltry 18,000
jobs were created nationwide in June — after an anemic
25,000 new jobs in May. Blame it on high oil prices, the
debate about cutting the deficit, unrest in the Middle East,
the spring earthquake in Japan — take your pick — the
result is the same: a rising unemployment rate. According
