and tactics of the formal global
BDS movement because of its

The demonizing of those who
support Israel's continued exis-
tence as a Jewish democratic
state, but who oppose the poli-
cies that we believe are endan-
gering that existence, is not
new. The organization Breira in
the 1970s was condemned as
treasonous for daring to state
that the establishment of a
Palestinian state alongside the
Jewish state was in Israel's own
interests. New Jewish Agenda
was subjected to similar defama-
tion in the 1980s and 1990s.
J Street is merely the latest
group to be subjected to such
nonsense for daring to have a
different vision of what is in the
best interests of Israel. This is
despite the fact that the posi-
tions of J Street are in clear
agreement with a significant
portion of the Israeli populace as
even a brief reading of Israel's
premiere newspaper, Haaretz,
would make clear.
For those who want to see
J Street's actual positions, as
opposed to distortions, they
need only go to its website
(jstreet.org ) and review "Myths
and Facts about J Street." It is
long past time for the far right of
the Jewish community — includ-
ing groups such as the ZOA
— to stop this demonizing of J
Street and instead to engage
in a discussion of what is in the
long-term interests of the Jewish
state. II
