frontlines Eyeing The Royals Robin Schwartz Contributing Writer W ith helicopters circling overhead, anxious fans crowding the streets of Los Angeles and paparazzi everywhere, Dr. Susan Malinowski, a retina surgeon from Birmingham, got a once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity: She met and shook hands with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate. "They engaged everyone and made great eye contact:' the still star-struck ophthalmologist said of her brush with British royalty "They're a stunningly handsome couple." Malinowski, an ophthalmologist with Southfield-based Retina Consultants of Michigan, and her husband, Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association, cut short a previously scheduled business trip to China and flew back to the United States after being invited to participate in the British royal couple's visit. Shapiro, who recently wrote the book The Comeback: How Innovation Will Restore the American Dream, spoke at a technology conference July 8 planned for William and Kate at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. He gave the duke and duchess a copy of his book. Malinowski and Shapiro met the royal couple again later that night during a private recep- tion at the British Consul-General's home in Los Angeles. Photographers and members of the press were not allowed inside, but Shapiro was able to take a few snapshots. (That's why he's not in any of the pictures.) "The Duchess raved about her trip to Canada and said this was her first trip to the U.S.," Malinowski said. "She couldn't believe the warm reception she'd received from Americans. "Kate really is very beautiful in person and is acutely aware that all eyes are on her. She's extremely thin, I would guess a size 0 or 2 on a roughly 5-foot-10-inch frame. When she arrived at the reception in a green Diane Von Furstenburg dress, leopard handbag and nude pumps, all of the ladies were whispering about her outfit. "She seemed very at ease as she worked the crowd. She was wearing her engagement ring, Diana's blue sapphire, which looked much larger in real life than in photos. I also thought it was interesting that she wore sheer, slightly iridescent pantyhose, despite her young age and the warm California night." Since the doctor returned from Los Angeles, her patients and co-workers have been captivated by her stories about meeting the royal newlyweds. William and Kate were treated like rock stars during their first official U.S. visit. They met mayors and public officials, movie stars, including Tom Hanks and Nicole Kidman, soccer great David Beckham, singing legend Barbra Streisand ... and you can add Metro JN CONTENTS Ophthalmologist Susan Malinowski of Birmingham meets Prince William. So, she was delighted to learn she had earned a summer internship with MTV in New York "It's exciting," Courtney said. "I'm working behind the scenes as a pro- duction assistant, which is great, but the catch is, it's an unpaid internship." Courtney's sister previously came to Hebrew Free Loan to help finance graduate school, and she suggested Courtney call HFL for help with some of her New York living expenses. "It couldn't have worked out any better," Courtney said. "I'm meeting people and getting experience, and HFL helped me get here. Everyone was so nice and put me at ease." Courtney's loan comes through HFL!s Building My Tomorrow program, which gives loans to women of all ages, for a variety of issues.
