Dinner 'n' Davening
Chasidic reggae singer Matisyahu
leaps into the 'Moishe' pit.
Matisyahu, who often jumps into the "mosh pit" to be caught by frenzied
fans in front of the concert stage, holds court at Moishe House Motor City.
I
n a matter of a few days, a visit
was arranged for Chasidic reggae
star Matisyahu to stop by Moishe
House Motor City in Midtown Detroit
for a kosher vegetarian dinner and a
prayer service.
Former Detroiter Rabbi Yonah
Bookstein, now of Los Angeles, helped
coordinate Matisyahu's visit to Moishe
House. The visit, attended by more
than 50 young Jewish adults, including
the house's six residents, took place
prior to the musician's July 10 concert
in downtown Detroit.
"Having dinner and davening with
Matisyahu reminded me of my time
in Israel on Birthright Israel and later
trips to the Holy Land," said Ari Katz
of Waterford. "Just sitting around a
table over dinner and sharing stories,
learning from each other, really made
the evening special.
"I was surprised at how humble
Matisyahu was. He was relatively quiet
and soft spoken. And he had a sense
of normalcy to him that is not often
JCC Hosts Carnival Day
The Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit in Oak Park
will host a Family Fun Carnival Day
from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, July 24, at the
JCC, 15110 W. 10 Mile Road.
Families with children of all
ages are invited for an afternoon of
games, inflatables, snacks and more.
Tickets are five for $1 or guests
found among his music artist and
celebrity peers. While davening, it was
as if we were all equals. It didn't mat-
ter what we did for a living, how much
money we had or where we came
from. We read the same words and
formed one minyan.
"Although I consider this event a
phenomenal experience Katz said,
"I also look at it as just another great
evening at Moishe House. I'm looking
forward to many more events to be
held at the house as well as just being
able to visit to socialize and network."
Jordan Rosenberg of West
Bloomfield said, "I had a great time
eating dinner and davening with
Matisyahu. During dinner, people
asked him questions about himself,
but there was also a true discus-
sion and not just an interview. I was
impressed that he seemed to have a
real interest in what is going on in
the city of Detroit and also the Jewish
community's involvement in shaping
the future of the city." I 1
may purchase an entire arm's length
of tickets for only $5.
Guests are asked to bring a dona-
tion of gently used clothing (any
size) or housewares to help sup-
port the National Council of Jewish
Women-Greater Detroit Chapter
resale shops.
