here's a movement afoot not
only to bring young Jewish
professionals back to Detroit,
but also overhaul the way the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
operates its young adult programs.
A new YouTube video is generat-
ing Internet buzz on this latest young
adult effort to move Jewish 20- and
30-somethings back to the city.
It starts like a movie trailer with
upbeat music and the caption: "This
August, across the nation, we're
coming together ... to help rebuild
Detroit:' Do It for Detroit, a month-
long nationwide effort kicking off in
August, aims to raise $100,000.
Sports leagues, tournaments and
social events already are planned in New
York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Detroit
for past or present Metro Detroiters or
those who just want to support "the D."
One local event is "Pitch For
Detroit" (Aug. 28 at Inglenook Park
in Southfield). Last summer, a simi-
lar softball tournament called "Pitch
For Israel" at Drake Park in West
Bloomfield attracted
hundreds of young
adults and raised
more than $30,000.

Kaufman of Huntington Woods,
CEO of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit. "The goal is to
raise $100,000 through tournaments
and fundraisers, individual donors
and a matching donor system — and
move 25 people downtown."

Urban Living
Each recipient will get a $250 per
month rent subsidy for up to one
year ($3,000). In exchange, they'll
be required to plan or organize one
meaningful event per month to
further build the Jewish and larger
Detroit communities. It's a similar
concept to Moishe House, a com-
munal housing program with dozens
of homes in 14 countries; in May, six
young Jewish professionals moved
into Moishe House Motor City on East
Ferry Street in Midtown. They receive
subsidized rent in exchange for host-
ing regular programs.
More than 300 people attended a
barbecue at the house June 25. Chasidic
reggae star Matisyahu even stopped by
for dinner and davening before his July
10 concert in Detroit.
Geographic boundaries for the Live
Detroit Fund, which will be adminis-
tered by CommunityNEXT, Federation's
young professional retention pro-
gram, have not yet been determined.

and guidelines are being finalized now
