W
est Bloomfield writer Jeffrey
Zaslow is at it again. He will
be collaborating on a mem-
oir with U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords,
D-Ariz., who identifies as a Jew, and her
husband, Mark Kelly, commander of
Space Shuttle Endeavour's final flight.
The book will
be a deeply per-
sonal account
of the couple,
recounting
their court-
ship, Giffords'
political life and
the attempted
assassination in
Jeffrey Zaslow
Tucson on Jan. 8
in which she was
shot in the head. The memoir also will
follow Kelly's work as a combat pilot in
Desert Storm and with NASA.
"The most important part of telling
someone else's story is to not get in the
way of it," said Zaslow, a columnist for
the Wall Street Journal. "You have to
listen really hard to the person's voice,
and then try to capture that voice on
the page."
Zaslow is the co-author of Highest
Duty, about hero pilot Capt. Chelsley
`Sully' Sullenberger, who safely landed
his crippled commercial airliner in
the New York's Hudson River. Zaslow
is also co-author of The Last Lecture,
which tells the story of college profes-
sor Randy Pausch and the legacy he
left before succumbing to cancer.
"Randy was a fun-loving guy, full
of exuberance said Zaslow. "Capt.
Sullenberger was a bit more serious,
though he also had a lighter side.
"If you spend hours talking to some-
one, and you listen closely, and you
take a lot of notes, you can eventually
organize their lives and their thoughts
in a way that tells a story — and that
sounds like them:"
In The Last Lecture, Zaslow tells the
story of Pausch's fight against pancre-
atic cancer and the life lessons that he
never forgot, despite his illness.
"I went to Randy's last lecture to
write a column about it for the Wall
Street Journal," Zaslow said. "I didn't
expect to write a book. But Randy was
the most alive person in the room that
day. He was so engaging and funny and
honest. I knew I was witnessing some-
thing very special.
"I found Randy's story so compel-

ling because it worked on several lev-
els," Zaslow said.
"The book is the story of his life
and what was meaningful to him. But,
as you read it, you realize he's really
talking to his children. He's sharing all
the life lessons he wished he had 20
years to tell them, but he only had a
few months. When you think of it from
that angle, it's a pretty incredible story."
Zaslow and his wife, WJBK-TV Fox
2 News anchor Sherry Margolis, have
three daughters. Alongside the memoir,
he is also working on a new book, The
Magic Room: A Story about the Love
We Wish for Our Daughters. Due for
publication early next year, this book
tells the story of a handful of brides
at a local bridal shop as they share
their journey through one of the most
important times of their lives. I I

With experience as Board member,
borrower, donor and staff member,
Cheryl Berlin has seen Hebrew Free
Loan from almost every angle. Almost
21 years ago, she sat on the agency
Board as a YAD liaison. Later, Cheryl
and her husband came to HFL to help
send their two daughters to Camp
Tamarack. Cheryl currently assists the
agency as Loan Program Manager.
Cheryl's job, created in partnership
with Jewish Family Service, and
funded through the generosity of the
Jewish Fund, is the point of entry for
community members who seek
loans from HFL. "There is a real
depth to case management, a lot
more than just answering a phone
and filling out a form, because each
situation is complex and individual,"
Cheryl says. "Also, we are part of
Federation's No Family Stands Alone
program, so we look really hard at
the big picture, helping applicants
work with other agencies to meet
needs HFL doesn't cover.
"You might think my job would be
overwhelming, but I work in a giving
position. Helping others enriches my
life daily."
