D
id you play on the Imperials
basketball team at the old
Dexter-Davison Jewish
Community Center in Detroit during
the mid-1950s?
Jerome "Jerry" Herskovitz did. He
recently found an old team photo,
from 1955 or 1956, and sent it to the
Jewish News in hopes that his former
teammates or their families will see it.
"I haven't been in contact with any
of my teammates since I left Detroit:'
he said.
Herskovitz, 69, a Detroit Cass Tech
High School and Wayne State University
grad, departed in 1965 to pursue a
career as a classical percussionist.
He now lives in the Baltimore
area and still works. He's the Dance
Department music coordinator at
Goucher College, and he's a percus-
sion faculty member at the Peabody
Institute of Johns Hopkins University.
From 1973-83, he was a percussion-
ist for the New York City-based Alvin
Ailey American Dance Theater.
Herskovitz has fond memories of
the Imperials, their snappy gold uni-
forms and the JCC basketball league.
"The gym was beautiful, and the
league was very organized. Everyone
had uniforms, and real referees called
the games." Herskovitz said that his
coach Ted (he doesn't remember his
last name) also ran the league and
the gym, was a high school basketball
coach and gave him a job as a junior
counselor at a summer day camp.
His eight Imperials teammates were
Ronnie Grenedier, Stewie Hurwitz,
Irwin Kalish, Allen Leonard, Bobby
Niscar, Jerry Serlin, Ernie Turken and
Harvey Wagner.
Herskovitz can be reached by email:

Happy 60th Birthdays!
Jerry and Joan Frohlich's simultane-
ous 60th-birthday celebrations will
continue a little longer. They won a
raffle for a seven-night cruise for two
and $500 spending money at the 29th
annual B'nai B'rith Great Lakes Golf
Classic. They bought one $25 ticket so
their odds of winning were 500-1.
"This is unbelievable. We've never
won anything:' said Joan Frohlich,
who turned 60 on May 29. Her hus-
band's 60th birthday was May 26.
They purchased the ticket from
Marvin Sonne, Joan's brother-in-
law, during a family get-together on
Memorial Day. The drawing was held a
week later at Wabeek Country Club.
Neither were present for the big
moment. Jerry was in bed because he
gets up early for his job as manager of
operations in the emergency room at
Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Joan, a
retired CPA, was at a ballet class.
Joan believes she had divine help
winning the raffle.
"My father, Henry Politzer, died last
year," she said. "He was a huge support-
er of B'nai B'rith. I think winning the
cruise was a gift from him because we
were helping an organization he loved."
The Frohlichs, who live in Novi,
were married in 1972. They have four
children and four grandchildren.
They've known each other since
1963, when Joan moved in across the
street from Jerry on Gardner in Oak
Park. They graduated from Oak Park
High and the University of Michigan.
Joan says they are leaning toward
taking an Alaskan cruise. Where
they're headed isn't as important as just
being able to take a cruise. Vacation
wasn't a top priority recently when
Jerry was out of work for a year. He's
been at Henry Ford for four months.
