But many political observers believe Michigan's new redistricting boundaries — exemplified by the choppy lines and ragged blocks of color superimposed atop the tri-county map — actually paint a distressing picture for Democrats and the Jewish community. The statewide political districts for the 2012 elections, recently drawn by Michigan Republicans and approved by the Republican-controlled state House and Senate, are caus- ing plenty of controversy. At press time, they had not yet been signed by Gov. Rick Snyder, but the state Democratic Party was already considering filing a lawsuit challenging what its chairman calls "unconstitutional racial gerrymandering." Republicans, on the other hand, insist they redrew the con- gressional and legislative map in accordance with the law. CONTINUED ON PAGE 12
