Linda Friedlaender of West Bloomfield checks online for obituaries daily.

"I don't miss out on a funeral that might be important and, if I can't go

to the funeral, I have the shivah information," she says.

Changing Times

Online updates about recent deaths
and funeral arrangements became
more popular when the Detroit News
and Free Press limited home deliv-
ery to three days per week. Those
relying on the daily obituaries in
the newspapers turned to online
services provided by the funeral
homes, which contain information
about upcoming funerals, directions
to shivah homes and links to chari-
table organizations requested by the
families for those wishing to make
donations.
Linda Friedlaender of West
Bloomfield, who stopped receiving
a daily newspaper when the home
delivery schedule was curtailed,
relies on the electronic Kaufman
Daily Update, which, according to
Techner, has more than
40,000 subscribers.
"I'm at an age [66]
where this is timely and
important information:'
said Friedlaender. "I have
elderly parents and three
sisters. We have a large
network. This way I don't
miss out on a funeral
that might be important
Otto Dube
and, if I can't go to the
funeral, I have the shivah
information."
To avoid the potential for abuse
or misuse that is inherent with any
technology, the Dorfman Chapel
uses a password-protected system
for those wishing to watch a funeral
service online.
"The last thing a family would
want is someone taking their per-
sonal moments," said Dorfman.
The Ira Kaufman Chapel does not
require a password to view a ser-

vice online; however, families may
choose whether they wish to have
the service posted on the website.
Hebrew Memorial Chapel gives
families the option of allowing open
access or requiring viewers to use
a password in order to view funeral
services online or post condolences
and greetings.
Another innovation is the use
of video tributes, similar to those
traditionally shown at bar and bat
mitzvahs. These professionally
produced video montages show the
life of the deceased with significant
family members and special events.
Depending on the wishes of the fam-
ily, the videos can be shown online,
in the lobby of the funeral home
prior to the service and in the home
where the family is sitting shivah.
According to Otto Dube
of Hebrew Memorial
Chapel, the video trib-
utes are an extension of
the photographs of the
deceased, which some
families are displaying
during the mourning
period.
"Photos give small
snippets of a person; the
video tribute is a histori-
cal progression, starting
with youth and moving on through
events like military service, bar
mitzvah and wedding. It really gives
a sense of a person's life:' Dube said.
Video tributes are currently
offered by Hebrew Memorial Chapel
at no extra cost and by the Dorfman
Chapel for an additional charge
ranging from $100-$350.
"Mourners can look at a person
when they were well:' said Dorfman.
"It's really positive." 1 I
