Aesk A MICHIGAN COMPANY SERVING YOU. mats NASA adds a Florida touch to National 9-11 Flag. GROUND CHUCK . From the USA \ f JCC to host stitching event for National 9-11 Flag. Chloe Logan Jewish News Intern T he National 9-11 Flag is giving the Star-Spangled Banner an entirely new mean- ing. Composed of an American flag destroyed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks as well as pieces of retired flags from across the country, the National 9-11 Flag pays homage to the strength and courage of America's servicemen and women, as well as firefighters, police officers and military officials. Before resting at its final destination in the National September 11 Memorial Museum, the New York Says Thank You Foundation is taking the flag to all 50 states, with Michigan's stop days away. With each stop, members of the New York City Fire Department will work with local service heroes to stitch together pieces of the flag. When the flag is in Michigan on Sunday, July 10, a ceremony with service heroes to sew the Michigan restorative patch (a piece of a retired American flag from Michigan) onto the flag will take place at 1 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. At 4 p.m., the public is wel- come to participate in the mitzvah of repairing the flag by adding a stitch. Wendy Hauser and Carolyn Deters of the New York Says Thank You Foundation were hoping the JCC would host the event there. Why the JCC? Hauser grew up in West Bloomfield, where her family once owned the land where Shenandoah Country Club and Temple Israel now stand. Although she no longer lives in Michigan, Hauser remains a member of Adat Shalom Synagogue in Farmington Hills and still comes home for holidays. Hauser said she chose the JCC as the event's location because it has such a JN CONTENTS , strong sense of community — a com- munity she still feels a part of. The New York Says Thank You reinforces this sense of community because Wendy's brother, Jeff Parness, is founder and chairman of the foundation, which began in 2003. So, the New York organi- zation has its roots in Jewish Detroit. Even if you cannot attend the public stitching, you can help the cause by nominating a service hero to partici- pate in the stitching ceremony. Whether the hero fought in a war, survived an attack or performed some other act of bravery, you can make a nomination by going to www.National911Flag.org and clicking on "Nominate a Service Hero." Although stitching the flag no the Michigan patch is free to the public, participants are encouraged to donate $5 to "Sponsor A Stitch."
