he Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills, in conjunction with the
Michigan Association of Russian-Speaking Jewry (MARJA), hosted a fundrais-
ing lunch on Sunday, June 19.
The event raised funds for the construction of a World War II Veterans Memorial to be
constructed on the campus of the center. The estimated cost is $250,000.
Attendees also had the opportunity to meet with WWII veterans and hear their sto-
ries. Soviet partisan and WWII veteran Yakov Sigal and American WWII veteran Albert
Zack were the featured speakers; they discussed stories of survival and fighting against

Its Annual Honors
Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield
presented its annual awards, including
the Jeffrey Weisberg Memorial Creative
Writing Awards to Caitlyn Dziuba,
Benjamin Ostfield, Madeline Gun and
Carly Abrahams.

Rubenstein Outstanding Leadership Award
was graduating senior Stephanie Singer.
The Bernard and Judith Cantor
Distinguished Educator Award went to Edna
Sable. A native of Israel where she taught
special needs students for 10 years, Sable

Additionally, attendees were able to submit the names, wartime photos and memora-
bilia for the WWII veteran in their family to be displayed at the memorial. Renderings of
the proposed memorial by Grissim Metz Andriese Associates of Northville also were on
display.
The Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America and Detroit Association of
Jewish WWII Veterans from the Former USSR are among other contributing organiza-

Grant Helps Kids With
Special Needs At JCC

$8,960 from the Ronald McDonald House
Charities of Southeast Michigan, for the
construction of Gaga pits at the JCC in
West Bloomfield and for supplies for chil-

dren in the special needs program.
Gaga is a version of dodge ball that
requires players to hit the ball with their
hand or fist (rather than catching and
throwing) below the waist of other players.
More than 150 children of all back-
grounds and religions participate in
programs at the JCC Special Needs

Join Shabbat In The Park
At Adat Shalom Synagogue
Adat Shalom Synagogue is hosting a
Shabbat in the Park service and picnic

dinner open to the community begin-
ning at 5:45 p.m. Friday, June 24, at Drake
Sports Park in West Bloomfield.
This casual family Shabbat experience is
designed for families with young children.
They will welcome Shabbat with music,
stories and blessings. Chazzan Dan Gross,
Rabbi Rachel Shere and Dan Shere will
lead the service.
The service will be followed by a BYOP
(Bring Your Own Picnic) dinner. Adat
Shalom will provide drinks and dessert.
