RETIREMENT LIVING Robby 'n' Roberts Two honorees grace fundraiser. \ Awardees Frank Robinson and Jimmy Roberts are flanked by Hank Greenberg's son Steve and ESPN reporter Jeremy Schaap. Steve Stein Special to the Jewish News F rank "Robby" Robinson hit a home run at the 21st annual Hank Greenberg Memorial Golf Invitational at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township. Robinson, a Hall of Fame Cincinnati Red and Baltimore Oriole outfielder and first baseman, served as a senior adviser to Commissioner Bud Selig and was Major League Baseballs' first black manager. He received the Hank Greenberg Award for athletic and per- sonal achievements. "Frank Robinson was terrific; we couldn't have asked for a better Greenberg Award honoree," said Hedy Blatt, communications and events director of the Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation, which sponsors the invi- tational. "He was gracious, funny and he was truly honored by the award:' she added. "He doesn't do many of these events. Only about one a year, and they're usually for a cancer charity" Proceeds from the invitational go to benefit prostate cancer initiatives and the MJSF/Karmanos Cancer Institute's Genetic Counseling Assistance Fund. Also feted was NBC Sports' Jimmy Roberts, who received the Dick Schaap Award for media excellence. Roberts has been with NBC for 11 years after 12 at ESPN. He's won a multitude of Sports Emmy Awards and worked 10 Olympic Games. Dan Miller replaced Jeremy Schaap, the late Dick Schaap's son, as dinner master of ceremonies for the second consecutive year because Jeremy was called away by ESPN. Jeremy was in Detroit the night before the June 6 invitational for a sponsor event, but had to.rush to upstate New York early the next morn- ing to cover the release of former NFL star Plaxico Burress from prison. "Jeremy couldn't get a flight back to Detroit in time, so we asked Dan to fill in as dinner emcee Blatt said. "He did a wonderful job with one day's notice." Miller, sports director and anchor for WJBK Fox 2 television, pinch-hit for Schaap last year with much more notice because Schaap was in South Africa covering the World Cup for ESPN. (For more on the event, see Danny Raskin's column on page 35.) Athletes Apply Now!
