they had been disrespected.
Treasurer Karen Bolsen of
Farmington Hills compared it to
anti-Jewish feelings she heard in
1963 when she moved into the area.
"This is very sad for me tonight,"
she said. "The undertone, the feel-
ing of hate at the podium directed
at us and others in the room has
become really obvious."
"Some of the behavior was
abominable and juvenile said
trustee Tim Devine of Farmington
Hills. However, he said, the interest
in community affairs "makes me
proud to be an American."
Vice President Sheilah Clay of
Farmington Hills, said, "I have
never seen what I saw here tonight,"
citing "disrespect and downright
rudeness from the audience'
"Don't fool yourself for a min-
ute because you did not fool us,"
she said, adding that "bigotry was
rampant," which prompted Sue
Kahn of Farmington Hills to stand
up and say, "I don't need to be lec-
tured by you." She walked out with
another sale opponent who loudly
and repeatedly told the board, "You
don't understand."
Secretary Debra Brauer of
Farmington Hills insisted, "We fol-
lowed every policy and procedure.
We are very ethical and take our
role as public servants very seri-
ously."
The board then voted 7-0 for the
sale.
Thanks to our Saturday morning school,
B'nai Moshe kids can pretend to be superheroes
they've never seen in cartoons.
Mordecai. Queen Esther. King David. Abraham. They're just a few of the Jewish
heroes your kids will want to emulate when they attend the L.I. FE. (Learning is a
Family Experience) education program at Congregation B'nai Moshe.
The Next Steps
Sara Roediger, senior planner for
West Bloomfield, says she has been
fielding many calls from concerned
community members about the
township's role and zoning require-
ments.
She says the property is zoned
R15 for single-family residential use,
which also has allowed it to be used
as an elementary school. The R15
zoning also allows for other uses
under a "special land use process."
Uses include both "a place of wor-
ship" and a "community building
or social club intended to serve the
nearby residential neighborhood."
If a request for a zoning change
is received, notice will be sent by
mail to all properties within 300
feet of the site and published in
the Spinal Column, the township's
paper of record. This must be done
at least 15 days prior to a public
hearing before the township's plan-
ning commission. The commis-
sion's recommendation then goes
to the township board to make a
final decision in an open and tele-
vised meeting. I I
