Planning a Summer Vacation on a Budget
High Five!
Friedman family graduates its fifth
and final student from Groves.

Don't skip a summer vacation this year because you're
short on funds. With a little creativity and some planning
you can still have that summer vacation you are looking
forward to. Here are a few ideas to consider when plan-
ning your vacation.
John Normandeau, CEO
Plan a "Staycation" and stay in state. Many attractions and
hotels offer discounts for residents. Have you explored every nook and cranny of the
state? Most people haven't. Head to the library and do a little research about all the fun
and interesting places in your own backyard.
Instead of flying why not drive? You can plan a road trip and stop along the way at fun
and interesting spots. There are plenty of great places to visit whether in state or out of
state.
Take advantage of last minute deals. You can do your research in advance about where
you want to go and the travel dates, but be prepared to wait until last minute to book
your trip. You can get some really good deals because vacation areas don't want vacan-
cies. If your lifestyle doesn't allow you to wait until the last minute, often times you can
find early bird deals as well. In either of these, the key is to be diligent and be ready to
act fast. Search the internet and sign-up for several fare-watcher sites to aid your efforts.
What about a train trip? It's an unusual mode of transportation in the U.S. so that could
add to the fun.
With a little work and some creativity you can still take that family vacation without
sacrificing your life savings. At BestSource Credit Union our mission is to improve our
members' financial lives. Stop by a branch or give us a call at 800.666.4500 to see how
we can help you achieve your goals for taking that vacation. For more information, visit

or many families, gradua-
tion is a time to recognize
their children's achievements
and look to the future as their chil-
dren venture on to post-high school
education and careers. At Groves, the
Friedman family of West Bloomfield
is about to embark on this adventure
for the fifth and final time. After 14
years at Groves, the 2011 graduation
ceremony was something special.
"It is a big deal in the Friedman
household to finally graduate from
Groves after 14 years:' said Lynda
Friedman, mother of five Groves
alumni. "We have been extremely
blessed to have been in the Groves
community and all the kids are thriv-
ing in their lives."
The Friedman graduates:
• Amy, Class of 2001, is now a
2005 graduate from the University
of Michigan School of Education.
She taught in Spanish Harlem and
the upper east side of New York City
for three years before returning to
Michigan, where she attended and
recently graduated from Wayne State
University's law program. At Groves,
Amy participated in sports, held posi-
tions in student government and was
active in volunteer events.
• Emily, Class of 2003, is also a U-M
alumna. She graduated in 2007 with a
liberal arts degree majoring in English
literature and Spanish. She worked at
Bloomberg television in NYC for two
years and went on to the Salt Institute
in Portland, Maine, for documentary
studies and now freelances for NPR in
Washington, D.C., where she has lived
for the past year. At Groves, she was
often on stage performing or direct-
ing.
"I now work as a multimedia pro-
ducer, and I can draw a straight line
from my high school experience to
where I am right now:' she said.
• Ben, Class of 2005, graduated with
dual degrees from U-M in 2009 from
the Ross School of Business and LSA-
Screen Arts. He freelanced for a year
and is now a producer at WDIV-TV in
Detroit and a freelance videographer.
At Groves, Ben was involved in sports,
theater, forensics and TV production.
Videos he did of school-sponsored
events helped him land his job at
WDIV.
• Julia, Class of 2007, earned a
degree from the Ford School of Public
Policy at U-M in 2010. She recently
completed her first year of law school
at Wayne State University. At Groves,
Julia was involved in sports and vari-
ous clubs, both academic and social
action.
"Groves introduced me to the
diversity of culture of Metropolitan
Detroit;' she said.
• Michelle, Class of 2011, is the
Friedman's last Groves graduate. She
will attend U-M in the fall like her
brother and sisters. She'll join the
School of Kinesiology. At Groves,
Michelle was all about sports.
