JTS annual gala dinner

was spiced by a rabbinic

chef competition.

T

his year's JTS (Jewish Theological
Seminary) gala dinner on June 1
began with fierce competition between
six Conservative rabbis, all JTS-educated, for
the coveted title of "Top Rabbinic Chef'
More than 550 patrons sampled appetiz-
ers cooked and served by the rabbi/chefs
in the foyer of Adat Shalom Synagogue in
Farmington Hills. Lines were long and the
smack talk was flowing as the rabbis worked
hard to win. In the end, Rabbi Aaron Bergman
of Adat Shalom emerged victorious. (Was it
that home court advantage?)
The JTS Culinary Adventure also featured
an update on JTS from Adat Shalom's former
rabbi, Daniel Nevins, now dean of the JTS
Rabbinical School in New York. Nevins handed
out the JTS Shin Award to congregants from
the six Conservative congregations who were
honored for their commitment to synagogue
life and Jewish education.
The event concluded with a dessert dem-
onstration and tasting by pastry chef Keegan
Gerhard, a judge on Food Network's Challenge
series. Patrons left with a packet of recipes
from the rabbis and honorees.
