Family Tradition

Brother and sister make the jump
to college athletics.

Steve Stein
Special to the Jewish News

T

here are now two Division
I college athletes in the
Meisner family.
Berkley High
School senior
Mark Meisner has
committed to play
baseball at Niagara
University, near
Niagara Falls, N.Y.
His sister Nicole
Meisner just com-
Mark Meisner
pleted an outstand-
ing freshman track
and field season at
the University of
Detroit Mercy.
Mark and Nicole's
parents are Mort
Meisner and
Nicole Meisner Leslie Mangas of
Huntington Woods.
Dad Mort played baseball at U-D
Mercy.
"I've always wanted to play Division
I baseball — I'm real excited',' said
Mark, 17, a three-year starter at sec-
ond base and shortstop at Berkley
who hit his first career home run in
his final home game.
"It was against Troy, and it went
about 365 or 370 feet over the fence in
left-center',' he said. "That was the far-
thest I've ever hit a ball. I didn't realize
it at first, so I was still running hard
when I got to second base. The umpire
told me I'd hit a homer and I could
slow down."
The 6-foot, 155-pounder was spot-
ted by Niagara coaches at a showcase
in Novi and invited to visit the cam-
pus late last year. The Purple Eagles
can use Mark's help after losing 40 of
48 games this spring. He'll be attend-
ing Niagara initially on an academic
scholarship.
Besides playing for Berkley, Mark
has played summer baseball for the
Huntington Woods Cats since he was 7.
He also was a member of the only
Detroit baseball team that has won a
gold medal at the JCC Maccabi Games.
The U16 team won a gold in 2009 in
Westchester, N.Y.
Nicole Meisner, 18, is a 2010 Berkley
grad and four-year member of the
Bears' track team who also has an
impressive Maccabi Games achieve-
ment on her resume.

She won nine gold medals in the
2008 Games hosted by Detroit. A year
later, she brought home silver and
bronze medals from the Maccabiah
Games in Israel.
The 5-foot-2 speedster runs sprint
events for U-D Mercy. She was named
the most improved athlete on the
women's track team, an unusual
accomplishment for a freshman.
In addition to finishing eighth in
the 200-meter run in a personal-
best 25.47 seconds at the Horizon
League outdoor meet last month in
Indianapolis, Nicole was a member of
U-D Mercy's second-place 4x400 and
fourth-place 4x100 relay teams.
A few weeks earlier, she helped the
Titans' 1600 medley relay team set a
school record of 4:03.23 at the presti-
gious Drake Relays.
"I thought I'd do well as a freshman,
but not that well:' she said. "It's prob-
ably because I'm working harder than
I've ever worked."
A psychology and criminal justice
major, Nicole hopes to work someday
for the FBI. She began attending U-D
Mercy on an academic scholarship,
and now she also has an athletic
scholarship.

Coden Aces Tournament
Jonathan Coden was the big winner
in the 11th Texas Hold'em tournament
hosted by the Bloch/Israel and Pisgah/
Zeiger B'nai B'rith units.
Coden won the June 5 tournament.
In addition to receiving a cash prize,
he earned a free entry into the next
Hold'em tournament in January 2012.
It was the first time a free tournament
entry was awarded.
Forty-six players competed.
The tournament was held in the
Conference Center at the Jewish
Community Center in West
Bloomfield.
Rounding out the top nine at the
final table were Bruce Weberman,
Randi Schaefer, Kevin Weinberg,
Ryan Schneider, Dave Ettlinger,
Chuck Mudryk, Al Mudryk and
Mort Friedman. Al Mudryk won the
June 2009 tournament.
Proceeds from this month's tourna-
ment will benefit B'nai B'rith Great
Lakes Region softball and basketball
leagues. I1
