THE SHENKMAN FELLOW FOR 2011: RABBI AVIE SHAPIRO Rabbi Shapiro is a veteran member of the Jewish Hospice & Chaplaincy Network's rabbinic team and brings a calming voice of experience to those facing the confusion and fear common at the end of life. "To be allowed by G-d to bring comfort to people who are suffering, the patients and their families," Rabbi Shapiro says, "is a great blessing." Rabbi Shapiro may be best known for his spiritual caregiving to residents of Jewish Senior Life's Fleischman Residence where he has served for 23 years. As a member of JHCN's pastoral care team, Rabbi Shapiro counsels patients and staff at St. John Hospice. He assists with medical issues as they pertain to Jewish tradition, and provides a comforting presence for patients and caregivers alike. Rabbi Shapiro, a former Hebrew school teacher for 18 years and a native of Baltimore, Maryland, made the transi- tion to caring for the elderly, the sick and the dying in 1988. He is utilizing his year as a Shenkman Fellow to hone his professional caregiving skills and continues to offer spiritual comfort to the most vulnerable among us.
