Huma Abedin and Anthony Weiner
better known as "The Love Doctor."
Orbuch, a Ph.D. in psychology/
sociology, is a professor at Oakland
University and a research professor at
the University of Michigan. She also
appears regularly on Fox 2 News. The
West Bloomfield wife and mother of
two is author of the book, Five Simple
Steps to Take Your Marriage From
Good to Great.
"I think many powerful, high-profile
men have the notion, the 'superman
phenomenon, that they're invincible
and invulnerable," she continued. "Either
they have the resources to cover it up;
they have these 'yes' people around them
who are going to cover it up and protect
them; or they believe because of their
power that they will be excused."
Orbuch says both
men and women
of all ages, races
and backgrounds
cheat or have sexu-
ally charged con-
versations on the
Internet through
social media. She
Terri Orbuch
says research stud-
ies show the numbers of men and
women engaging in sexual or emo-
tional infidelity outside of marriage
(those who admit it) have increased
in the last two decades.
"There may be more opportunities
because of social media;' she said.
"If you're engaging in these kinds of
activities you have an internal need
for change. Men and women cheat
for different reasons. Men go outside
of marriage because they don't feel
noticed or they feel like they're being
taken for granted. Women go outside
of a long-term, committed relation-
ship because they're not getting the
intimacy that they crave and need."
Calls to Resign
Weiner is no stranger to social
media. You can find many of the
liberal Democrat's rants and raves,
mostly against Republicans, on YouTube.
Recently, he released a gawky photo
of himself from his bar mitzvah day
in Park Slope, N.Y., as promised to his
Twitter followers. But now the sexting
scandal challenges his political standing.
After new, embarrassing photos of
Weiner surfaced over the weekend,
top Democrats in the House turned
up the heat, pressuring him to give up
his congressional seat. But, instead of
stepping down, Weiner issued a state-
ment saying he was taking a leave of
absence and checking into a rehabilita-
tion facility for professional treatment
"to focus on becoming a better hus-
band and healthier person." The loca-
tion of the facility was not disclosed;
it's unclear when he'll return.
"This sordid affair has become
an unacceptable distraction for Rep.
Weiner, his family, his constituents and
the House,' Rep. Debbie Wasserman
Schultz, the Democratic party chair-
woman, is quoted as saying. "I think he
needs to resign so he can focus on his
family, focus on his own well-being:'
Several other lawmakers echoed
those sentiments. Demonstrators have
also called for Weiner's resignation
while counter protesters urged him not
to quit. At press time, he had not made
a decision to resign.
"As an American, I
wish we would stop
putting our elected
officials on a pedes-
tal when it comes to
sexual ethics:' said

of Congregation
T'chiyah in Oak
