Covering and
Connecting
Jewish Detroit
Every Week

ere in Detroit,
"sexting" is old
news. For years,
we've had to endure the
headlines, the raunchy text
messages, and all of the
lurid details in the "sex and
text scandal" involving the
city's former mayor Kwame
Kilpatrick and his former
chief of staff, Christine
Anthony Weiner
Beatty (and various other
women).
Kilpatrick remains in jail at Cotton Correctional Facility
in Jackson County for violating his parole after he pled
guilty to lying under oath. He's awaiting word on a new bid
to be released. A hearing was also to be held this week in
front of Wayne County Circuit Judge David Groner to deter-
mine whether the proceeds from his new book, Surrendered!
The Rise, Fall and Revelation of Kwame Kilpatrick, will be
seized to help pay off the $800,000 in restitution he still
owes the city. He also faces federal corruption charges.
While the Kilpatrick saga continues to unfold, countless
other powerful men and public officials have joined the
growing list of leaders caught up in wild sex scandals of
their own, including Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Edwards,
Eliot Spitzer, John Ensign, Mark Sanford, Larry Craig, Bill
Clinton and now Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY).
Weiner, 46, who is married, admitted at a news confer-
ence just over a week ago that he sent lewd photos and sex-
ually suggestive messages to several women through social
networking sites, including Twitter. Originally, he made up a
story to try and cover it up.
His wife, Huma Abedin, a top aide to Secretary of State
Hilary Clinton, is pregnant with the couple's first child. She
is Muslim and he is Jewish; his New York district encom-
passes parts of Queens and Brooklyn, perhaps the most
Jewish congressional district in the country.
"Why do powerful men cheat and lie and do all of this?
They think they won't get caught:' says Dr. Terri Orbuch,
