century performance.

nvestigative journalist David
Bedein will speak at a
StandWithUs-Michigan program
at 7:30 p.m. June 21 at Temple Israel
in West Bloomfield. Admission is free.
Bedein, the Jerusalem bureau chief
of the Israel Resource News Agency
and director of the Center for Near East
Policy Research, will address "Stop the
Teaching of Hate: Anti-Israel Education
in U.S.-funded Palestinian Schools."
For the Sake of Nakba, a documen-
tary commissioned in part by the cen-
ter and filmed last year in the United
Nations Relief and Works Agency
(UNRWA) refugee camps in the West
Bank and Gaza, also will be screened.
Bedein's topic reflects the center's
concern about UNRWA, which was
established after Israel's 1948 victory
in its War of Independence and cre-
ated the Palestinian refugee problem
by not resettling them. UNRWA is the
only U.N. agency whose sole respon-
sibility has been Palestinian refugees
and their descendants.
Funded primarily by the European
Union and the U.S., UNRWA uses
much of its funding for classroom edu-
cation that promotes terrorism and the
obliteration of Israel. These examples
are shown in the film.
UNRWA operates according to rules
not applicable to any of the other U.N.
refugee agencies working under the
mandate of the United Nations High
Commission for Refugees, which is
responsible for all the world's other
refugees. The latter attempts to reset-
tle refugees if they cannot be repatri-
ated, which is often the case.
However, UNRWA promotes the
political agenda of Palestinian and
Arab leaders by maintaining the
refugee status of Palestinians unless,
and only if, they are given the "right
of return:'
Canada has cut its annual contribu-
tion to UNRWA, citing lack of trans-
parency in how the money is used.
"I hope the film will encourage
viewers to contact their representa-
tives in Washington and urge them to
take the same step," Bedein said.
