Rabbis Joseph Krakoff of Shaarey Zedek and Yechiel Morris of Young Israel of Southfield get ready to plant in the Southfield Community Garden. ongregation Shaarey Zedek, Young Israel of Southfield and Yad Ezra are very excited about a new partner- ship to help feed fresh produce to the hungry in our community. On Sunday, May 22, the three partners gathered to plant vegetable seeds in the Southfield Community Garden, on the Shaarey Zedek campus. In the Talmud, we learn Kol Yisrael are- vim ze'lazeh (All Jews are responsible for one another). We are taught to take care of each other, ensuring that no one in our com- munity goes hungry. For the second year, the garden will contribute fresh herbs and vegetables to Yad Ezra in Berkley. Last year, the garden yielded more than 600 pounds of produce. The 30-foot by 30-foot garden was dedi- cated by Rabbi Joseph Krakoff of Shaarey Zedek and Rabbi Yechiel Morris of Young Israel of Southfield. They dug the first hole together and planted the first seeds. Children from both synagogues planted rows of vegetables, including cucumbers, snap peas, green beans, squash, tomatoes and onions, which will be distributed to Yad Ezra clients on a regular basis throughout the growing season. Volunteer chairs for the garden include Karen Dubrinsky from Shaarey Zedek, Rachel Alpert from Young Israel of Southfield and June Stillman and Bert Stein from Yad Ezra. A host of sponsors subsidized the cost of the garden. If you are interested in being a volunteer gardener or donor, contact Martha Goldberg at (248) 357-5544 or email mgoldberg@ shaareyzedek.org .
