One Nation
Ann Arbor event draws
hundreds to sample
Israel's cultural diversity.
T
he Ann Arbor community
gathered May 22 to celebrate
Israel's 63rd birthday and to
experience Israeli cultural diversity at
the Jewish Community Center.
As in previous years, participants
at Celebrate Israel, sponsored by the
Jewish Federation of Greater Ann
Arbor, enjoyed Israeli dancing, tasty
Israeli street food, fun Israel-themed
activities for the entire family and a
shuk (marketplace) with Israeli mer-
chandise. The festival also included an
olive press, Druze pita making, kibbutz
activities and more. This year's theme
was "Many Communities: One Nation."
The event drew local families as
well as students from nearby Eastern
Michigan University in Ypsilanti and
the University of Michigan.
Entertainment included an oud and
dumbeck (drum) performance by Aron
Kaufman and Abdul Karim Bader.
For the fourth year in a row, Ann
Arbor hosted a delegation from
its Partnership 2000 community,
Moshav Nahalal. The delegation
developed a special exhibit focusing
on the contribution of moshavim to
Israeli society.
