Family Approves
New Mumbai Chabad
MUMBAI, India (JTA) — The fam-
ily of murdered Chabad emissaries
Gabriel and Rivky Holtzberg has
removed their objections to the
reconstruction of the Chabad house
in Mumbai.
The family removed its complaints
against the Chabad-Lubavitch
movement at the Indian Charity
Commission, and formally recog-
nized Chabad as the trustee of the
Nariman House.
The Holtzbergs were killed in the
center along with four visitors in the
November 2008 attacks on several
Mumbai sites, including luxury
hotels, a train station and a popular
cafe. More than 170 people were
killed in the attacks.
The Holtzbergs' son Moshe, then
2, was taken out of the house by
his Indian nanny and survived the
attack. Moshe and his nanny are now
living in Israel.

Gavriei and Rivky Holtzberg
"We realize that our family made
some mistakes along the way and
hope that people will understand
that they were committed purely
out of love and attachment to Gaby
and Rivky," said Moshe Holtzberg,
Gabriel Holtzberg's brother, in a
statement provided to JTA.
For security reasons, the Chabad
house in Mumbai has been operat-
ing since the attacks from an undis-
closed location under the direction
of the new permanent Chabad-
Lubavitch emissaries there, Rabbi
Chanoch and Leah Gechtman.
Schechter Employees
Strike Over Salary
JERUSAELM (JTA) — Employees
of Jerusalem's Schechter Institute
for Jewish Studies are striking over
a salary dispute.
The strike at the Conservative
movement institution has been in
place since the beginning of May.
It affects only the institute's Israeli
students. The overseas program,
made up of students from the
Jewish Theological Seminary, is
exempt from the strike.
Mother, Grandfather
Murdered Girl, 4
JERUSALEM (JTA) — The mother
and grandfather of a 4-year-old girl
murdered in Israel have been con-
victed of killing her.
Ronny Ron and Marie Renault were
convicted in Petah Tikvah District
Court of murdering Rose Pizem in
2008. The girl, who was born in Paris,
was the daughter of Renault, a French
Jew, and Benjamin Pizem, Ron's son.
Renault later began a relationship with
and moved in with Ron in Israel.
Pro-Nazi Comments
Earn Cannes Sanctions
PARIS (JTA) — The Cannes Film
Festival sanctioned director Lars
von Trier for his expressions of
sympathy for
Hitler and Nazis.
The festival
board of direc-
tors declared von
Trier "persona
non grata" and
removed him
from the festi-
Lars von Trier
val, but said his
current film,
Melancholia, remains in competi-
tion.
Von Trier described himself as
a Nazi who is not against Jews. He
also called Israel "a pain in the ass"
during a news conference at the
Cannes Film Festival to promote
his film. He later apologized.
Circumcision Ban
On Bay Ballot
SAN FRANCISCO (JTA) — A measure
seeking to ban male circumcision will
appear on the November ballot in San
Francisco.
More than 7,700 signatures from
city residents on a petition in support
of the measure were approved as valid
by city officials May 18. At least 7,168
signatures were required, and more
than 12,000 were submitted.
The measure, which would apply
only in the city of San Francisco, would
make it a misdemeanor crime to or-
cumcise a boy before he is 18 years old.
The maximum penalty would be a year
in jail and a $1,000 fine. Circumcisions
would be permitted only for medical
reasons, with no religious exemptions.
Even if the measure passes in
November, it likely would be chal-
lenged as a constitutional violation of
freedom of religion.
