Inquisition Apology
May Be A First
SAN FRANCISCO (JTA) — A Spanish
official has given what is being her-
alded as the country's first formal
apology for the Inquisition's killing
of Jews.
On the island of Mallorca, where 37
Jews were killed in 1691 for secretly
practicing Judaism, the regional presi-
dent offered the apology at a May 5
memorial service in the city of Palma.
"We have dared to gather here to
recognize the grave injustice com-
mitted against those Mallorcans who
were accused, persecuted, charged
and condemned to death for their
faith and their beliefs," the Balearic
Islands regional president, Francesc
Antich, told a crowd of 130.
Spain's Jewish federation told
reporters it may have been the first
such government-sponsored event in
Iran Executes Jewish
Woman, Husband
WASHINGTON (JTA) — An
Iranian human rights group has
identified the Jewish woman and
her Armenian Christian husband
who were executed in Iran.
The Human Rights Activists
News Agency reported that Adiva
Soleyman and Varjan Petrosian
were hung on March 14 at Evin
Prison, a facility for political
prisoners in northwest Iran. It
identified Soleyman as Jewish
and Petrosian as Armenian.
The agency quoted a
Revolutionary Court as confirm-
ing the executions, along with
those of three others who were
unidentified. It said relatives of
the dead who tried to recover
the bodies for ritual burial were
threatened with arrest.
Michael Posner, the U.S. assis-
tant secretary of state for human
rights, had not named the
couple when he testified about
them last week at a U.S. Senate
Foreign Relations Committee
hearing on Iran's human rights.
Posner said human rights in
the Islamic Republic had dete-
riorated in the first part of 2011.
He listed as examples mass exe-
cutions; the killing of protesters
in Tehran and among ethnic
Arabs; harsh prison sentences
for Bahl leaders; tough prison
conditions for political detain-
ees; and that "a Jewish woman
and her Armenian-Christian
husband were reportedly
executed based on undisclosed
charges."
Spanish history.
The ceremony was suggested
by Michael Freund, the chairman
of Shavei Israel, an Israel-based
nonprofit that seeks out "lost Jews"
around the world. Freund said he
hoped it would inspire similar cer-
emonies elsewhere in Spain.
When the Inquisition was launched
in 1492, Spain's Jews either left the
country or converted to Catholicism.
Many "conversos" continued to prac-
tice Judaism in secret and were pun-
ished severely if caught.
On Mallorca, 82 conversos were
condemned in 1691. Thirty-four were
publicly garroted and their bodies
were burned in bonfires. Another
three, including a rabbi, were burned
alive.
It is believed that about 15,000
descendants of conversos live on
Mallorca today. Nearly all are Catholic.
Lawmakers Introduce
Shoah Funding Bill
WASHINGTON (JTA) — Lawmakers

$10 million for Holocaust education
over five years.
