Chef Rabbi! arking a departure from its traditional gala din- ner, this year's JTS (Jewish Theological Seminary) citywide event will be a food-themed evening. The JTS Culinary Adventure — June 1 at Adat Shalom Synagogue in Farmington Hills — will begin with a six-rabbi cook- ing competition where JTS alumni will compete for the title of "Top Rabbinic Chef?' Competitors are Rabbis Jonathan Berger, Aaron Bergman, Robert Gamer, Joseph Krakoff, Elliot Pachter and Steve Rubenstein, who will present their entries of tasty appetizers during the cocktail portion of the evening. Each guest will have the chance to sample the appetizers and cast their vote to determine the winner. The idea for the event originated with the rabbis, who are raising schol- arship support for JTS. "I became a rabbi to share my love of Judaism, and what greater love is there than the love of food:' said Berger, who serves at B'nai Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield and at Hillel Day School in Farmington Hills as rabbi in residence. Leaders from the six Conservative congregations of Metro Detroit will be honored with the JTS Shin award for their commitment to synagogue life and Jewish education.
