awareness and funds to help patients.

W
ith a devotion to music
and a focus to bring
awareness of early ovarian
cancer detection, Elaine Greenberg is
set to host her fifth annual benefit jazz
concert.
A retired piano and voice teacher,
Greenberg of Farmington Hills is also
an 11-year ovarian cancer survivor
who combines her passions to plan
the yearly event.
"Jazz A Lot: Music for the Soul" at
7:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 24, at Temple
Israel in West Bloomfield will be
headlined by saxophone player George
Benson and feature the Cliff Monear
Trio.
The concert is co-sponsored by
Temple Israel and Living For Music, an
organization created by Greenberg —
who serves as president — and her
husband, Shelly, to bring music and
comfort to those affected by cancer.
For the first time, members of the
Detroit Symphony Orchestra's Civic
Jazz Ensemble will perform at the
event.
"I love exposing young musicians
to the public, to showcase the young
talent we have in this city," Greenberg
said.
Greenberg brings music to cancer
patients on a regular basis through
her singing and CDs. She also is
Midwest regional coordinator of
Survivors Teaching Students: Saving
Women's Lives, sponsored by the
Ovarian Cancer National Alliance.
Through the group, ovarian cancer
survivors speak to students in medi-
cal fields to increase awareness about
ovarian cancer symptoms and risk
factors.
Brochures about the disease, pro-
vided by Beaumont Hospital, will be
distributed at the concert.
According to the National Ovarian
Cancer Coalition, there is no early
detection test for ovarian cancer.
Symptoms may include bloating, pel-
vic or abdominal pain, trouble eating
or feeling full quickly, need to urinate
urgently or often, fatigue, upset stom-
ach or heartburn, back pain, pain
during sex, constipation or menstrual
changes.
Annually in the U.S., more than
20,000 women are diagnosed and
approximately 15,000 die. If diagnosed
and treated early, the five-year sur-
vival rate is more than 90 percent.
"All proceeds from the event and
from my fundraising CDs go to help
cancer patients and their caregivers:'
Greenberg said. "The money raised
stays in our state and is donated to
Michigan cancer centers:'
The group has purchased CD
players and iPods for those receiv-
ing chemotherapy treatments.
Recently they presented gift bags that
included blankets, scarves and socks
to cancer patients at the Veterans
Administration Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Greenberg often visits those under-
going cancer treatments. "I sing for
them," she said. "And they frequently
sing with me — taking their minds of
the necessary poison that is going into
their bodies and putting a smile on
their faces." I _ I
