Film Notes
Opening Friday, May 19, is the latest
installment of producer and native
Detroiter Jerry Bruckheimer's swash-
buckling film series.
Pirates Of The
Caribbean: On
Stranger Tides,
in 3D, again
stars Johnny
Depp as Captain
Jack Sparrow.
Bruckheimer, 65,
is a Mumford High
Jerry
graduate.
Bruckheimer
Bridesmaids,
currently in theaters, is the first
ensemble female-cast comedy pro-
duced by Judd Apatow, 47. Like his
mostly male-cast
hits (Knocked Up,
Superbad), it fea-
tures some good-
natured raunchy
stuff with a lot of
poignant situations
grounded in real-
ity. This comedic
Judd Apatow
style was first
tried out in the short-lived '90s TV
series Freaks and Geeks; and Apatow
tapped Paul Feig, 47, the creator of
that show, to direct this film.
Kristen Wiig
(SNL) stars as
Annie (she also
co-wrote the
film), whose life
is a mess. Still,
she tries to rise
to the occasion
when Lillian (Maya
Maya Rudolph
Rudolph, 39), her
best friend, gets
engaged and asks
her to be maid of
honor and help
with the wedding
arrangements.
Look for Jill
Clayburgh, who
Jill Clayburgh
died last year, in a
smallish role as Annie's mother. This
is her last film appearance.
Surprised Me
French actress Eva Green, 30, who
has often been described as "aston-
ishingly beautiful," is best known for
co-starring in Kingdom of Heaven
and Casino Royale. She currently
co-stars in the Starz cable original
series Camelot, which concludes
later this month. She just has been
cast as the "baddest" character in
director Tim Burton's upcoming film
version of Dark Shadows, the '60s
cult TV soap opera. Johnny Depp
stars.
In a recent interview, Green noted
that she knew former Dior designer
John Galliano and that she was
surprised by his anti-Semitic com-
ments. She added, to my surprise,
that her mother, actress Marlene
Jobert, 67, is Jewish (her father is
not).
Jobert,
who has
worked
exclusively
in French
language
films and TV,
was born in
Eva Green and
Algeria to
Marlene Jobert
Sephardic
Jewish parents. Green noted in
passing that she, personally, is not
religious.

Douglas News
Kirk Douglas, 94, will attend the
San Francisco Jewish Film Festival
this July and will be presented
with the Festival's "Freedom of
Expression"
award. The
award cites
Douglas'
decision, as
the star and
producer of
the 1960 film
Spartacus, to
Michael and Kirk
give screen
Douglas
credit to
Dalton Trumbo, the film's writer.
Trumbo, who was blacklisted
around 1950 for his former
Communist party ties, continued
to write some films under phony
names. When Douglas gave him
open credit, it was a major blow at
the blacklist, which ended within a
few years.
On May 2, Michael Douglas, 66,
traveled to Montreal to headline a
benefit dinner for the city's Jewish
General Hospital (which is affiliated
with McGill University.) He did so to
thank the staff of the hospital.
Douglas, who owns a vacation
home near Montreal, consulted
Jewish General Hospital physicians
last year about his throat trouble.
Other doctors had given him a clean
bill of health a few weeks earlier, but
the Jewish General doctors found a
tumor. He began immediate treat-
ment for throat cancer in New York.
After months of treatment,
Douglas now looks healthy. He
declared in January that he was
cancer-free but continues to get
regular check-ups and remains "cau-
tious." Li
